Good Afternoon All,

We've had a little discussion about the 738p aka Lil' Dan and wanted to share a couple of photos for size comparison.  For those of you that don't know the 738p was only made for a short period of time back in 1992/93 if I remember correctly.  As you might be able to tell from the model number it's chambered in 38+P.  There are references to a blued version with a model number 38p but I haven't seen one.

The photo below shows a large frame (741), small frame (715) and the 738p.

The photo below shows a S&W Model 30 along side the 738p for comparison.

I've read in other post before that the barrel is not removable.  That is incorrect the barrel is removable and based on the box it was available in 2" or 4".

Can you add a Super Mag frame to that picture? I'm really just curious how all four frames would size eachother. Does anyone know if Smith's X-Frame is larger than a Super Mag frame?

Hey YungJosh,

Not sure how the SuperMag compares with the Smith X Frame but below is the photo you requested.  I would image that the X Frame wouldn't be any larger than the SuperMag but that is just a guess...

From left to right: Model 7414 > Model 741 > Model 715 > Model 738p

THANKS JODY! wowSurprised!!!! stainless and rubber never looked so goodLaugh. That is a beautiful picture- judging by it it looks like the supermag is very similar to the large frame, only difference I can see is the longer cylinder. Do you know if the trigger assemlby is the same for both of them?

I missed a model 38P at J&G sales years ago, so I'm convinced they exist.  Here is the model 738P I picked up in January.

That's a good lookin' little 738, nice catch!Cool

In other pics, I've noticed that Jody's 738 has something stamped on the left side of the frame, whereas NVG's gun does not. What is that on yours, Jody?

Dan Wesson 738P (Lil Dan)Image Enlarger

I believe I can answer your question to Jody. As I also own a 738P the inscription on the side just says "WESSSON FIREARMS, PALMER MASS. U.S.A." then toward the front of the cylinder it has 38+p and the serial number then on the shroud it has .38+P CTG. I have attached a photo and left it large inhopes you can read what it says.

Does anybody happen to know if the longer barrels were ever made or are there some compatible new ones?

MrDwolf...Welcome...glad to have you aboard, nice looking Lil' Dan! Stop by the new member intro area when you have a moment & tell us about yourself.Smile

The question I had regarding Jody's gun was the mark on the left side of the frame, visible in this pic (click the pic to make larger)...

The question was answered in another thread later on...it's the Dan Wesson logo that was being used at the time in the Palmer shop, like the one on this shipping box.

I'm not sure why they didn't use that logo on all Lil' Dan's, as so far, Jody's is the only one I've seen with one.

To answer your barrel question...from the info we have gathered thus far, it appears that there were no extra barrels made for these guns. And because of the unique size of these guns, barrels from other guns will not interchange.
