I recently got a DW 15-2 pack from an estate sale. I noticed the hammer is much looser than another DW 15 I have. The new gun seems older with the trigger stop screw in the trigger. My first DW has the trigger stop screw in the fame.

The hammer will move side to side a few millimeters, enough to click against the frame. Everything else on the gun seems spot on.

How much side to side play is acceptable in the hammer?

What would the forum recommend to tighten it up.

All the really knowledgable folks must be sleeping. I have never noticed any of my guns having a loose hammer. Pictures would be helpful. My first thoughts are loose sideplate screws, someone really polished the lockwork and frame and I Dunno. After my second sleep I will look at one of my guns to see if there is any play. Since I caught DWAS I only sleep several hrs. and then check the forum and gunbroker. Just kidding!! Lifelong sleep habits. Have you ooened uo the sideplate yet. Probably the first step. Check the "average Joe tuneup" thread for help.

Wellll, I checked several guns. The play in the hammer ranged from snug to a couple of mm.  The one of three I checked with the most play is a well used 715 with a fabulous action, one of my lightest. If the gun shoots good I would not worry, but check those sideplate screws.

<scratching head> That surely can't be right.. the hammer is only a few thousandths of an inch narrower than the frame.

that's what I meant, a few thousandths (.001-.002) at best.It strikes the transfer bar ( connector ) which strikes the firing pin. Unless it creates FTF's I don't think you have a problem. It would be good to do the tuneup or a good cleaning with a "new" old gun.

It is only good engineering practice to have a "running" fit on something like this. Maybe as much as .005", but certainly not

"side to side a few millimeters". Dan's are *very* elegantly engineered, and something has to be wrong if it can truly be moved from side to side a few millimeters. A millimeter is .03937" for heavinsake..

Millimeter may be a bit much, but it does move more than my other DW which has no side to side hammer movement. The seller thought the revolver was broken when he sold it because the cylinder would bind. Properly setting the gap fixed that.

When I get time this weekend I'll strip it down for cleaning and give it a good once over.

Thanks for all the responses.

More than likely, disassemble and cleaning is all you need.  When you disassemble it, you may find something that isn't quite right.  If you have questions- just ask.  We'll all help to figure it out.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Ron, I misspoke when I said millimeters. Not as bad as that technician that didn't convert metric to inches and screwed up the Hubble Telescope. Couple of thousandths on an inch it is. As the lockwork polishes itself from use, the action gets lighter, to a point. Wm, I would suggest some Wolff Springs for a big difference. As I said, my best shooting dans have a little wiggle in the hammer. I never paid it any attention before.

uncocked my 44 "wiggles" side to side a little bit, cocked no movement, nice and tight, my 44 is well used to say the least
