Probably hard chrome. BTW, factory nickel porkchops are the bomb. The nickel really slicks the lockwork because of the nickel on the inside of the frame and sideplate. Put in Wolff reduced power springs and it is as sweet as any revolver made.
This I will attest to this as well. I had a 15-2 refinished in bright nickel through a local gun shop who did the tear down and reassembly. The actual refinishing was done locally as well by the (now defunct) US Firearms Company. Every surface inside the frame is smooth as glass. Lots of smoothing and polishing, and the gunsmith obviously did a lot of careful fitting and tuning. Easily my most highly prized handgun.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I concur with the consensus here, ZERO chance of any stainless Model 12's available at all.
Nickel guns of any sort was/were introduced a bit after DW's production ball was rolling initially. I know there were special nickel & engraved guns destined right from the get-go. But the earliest examples of box labels I have as proof are currently...model 15-1's...
And the model 14-1's

noticed the cylinder release is the small style, serrated on top, not the large style with serrations down the face. Small style went with 14-15's, didn't they?
I believe the original Model 14/15 design had the "narrow tipped" Ejector Rod and a Latch with serrations all down the face. The 14-1/15-1 models had the "mushroom" tipped Ejector Rod and a Latch with serrations on the top only.
