I just purchased a used Model 15.  Actually, it has no model designation on it, but it matches with the sticky at the beginning of this forum.  It came with the same wrench as in the photo and there is the problem.

I want to remove the barrel, but I don't see how the wrench can possibly work with the barrel nut that I have.  My wrench looks like it would work fine with the external nut, but not with the internal one.  Is there a piece that is missing?

kr54, First things first. WELCOME to the dwf. You will have a special place in my heart since I happened to be my first first welcome.

Now, to answer you. Yes. There is a piece missing, but you should not use that early type wrench as they tend to slip and damage the barrel nut. On the side of the forum page is an ad for EWK arms. That would be Eric. He makes the very best barrel wrenches. He also makes barrel nuts, barrels, sells small parts and springs, sights and shrouds.Just tap on his ad and what you need appears at your door. You can also buy wrenches on ebay. Do not discard your twelve sided original wrench. It  works for the original models 11+12 with exterior nut. I would love to be first in line if you want to sell it( or trade). You are starting on a great adventure. Dans are entrancing and quite often become an obsession. The forum is a great resource peopled by nice people with great knowledge. Soon many more members will welcome you with smileys. Ole Dog

Welcome to the forum from PA. I am sure that Ole Dog has it right, you probably have an older style wrench and it is most likely missing the insert. I definitely urge you to purchase the wrench from EWK Arms, it will be money well spent.

   Oh and we love cool-pics

Very nice! Cool that you got the short barrel with it also. Yep that wrench is for the external nut like a model 11 or 12 has. It mat have originally come with an insert to fit your internal nut.

Get a wrench from EWK Arms and you will be happy.

Nice looking!  You can use the the old wrench allen end to remove the grip. I would suggest one or two wood grips(old style). A small one for the 21/2" bar. and your choice of lg. grip. There is often corrosion under the Pachmyer grips from moisture collecting. If you keep them on  clean and lubricate under them often. A Sacremento grip would look nice IMO.

You are missing this insert to make your original barrel wrench work...

But yes, do as Lonwolf suggested & get one of the EWK wrenches, they absolutely work best out of all the wrenches available out there.

Congrats on landing your model 15, it looks great!occasion

Thanks, everyone.  It's on its way.  There is no rust under the grips, just some sort of gooey white residue.

Sounds like white lithium grease was sprayed into the internals.  Not uncommon.  A good cleaning will take care of that.
