Looked at a Model 15 porkchop the other day, had a 6" BA and a 2" also in factory box with tool, gap gage and warrenty card and extra finger grooved wood grips with small medallions. Now for the question, inside the crane where the serial number is stamped on the old 15's I saw under the serial number the designation 40 then under that 15-B. Anybody else ever see that? What's it mean? Its obvioulsy a old 15 porker but that '-B' designation has me baffeled. Was this some kind of second generation?
I liked the looks of the gun, nice shape, complete package in the orig box.
I'm just wondering about that marking though.

THE "B" DESIGNATES BLUED.........
Blued as opposed to what? Any 15 porkchop model would have been manufactured before 1975, stainless guns were not introduced until 1982. Why would a blued gun be stamped "B" in an era when only blued guns (except possibly a very few nickel or Armolloy) were being manufactured?
I don't know the correct answer, but "blued" seems unlikely.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I have a 15 just like it and it DOESN'T have any marking other than the serial number in the crane area. I have no clue what it stands for.
WOW, looks like I stumped the knowledge base on this one so far. Now this is going to bother me until I find out. Just another DW mystery perhaps?
Happy turkey day everyone!

Is this number stamped in or cast into the frame? Here's an example of a cast in number on a large frame gun.
I haven't seen a cast in number on a small frame gun yet, and definitely none on any of my model 15 'Chops. If your number is stamped in, I'm betting it was something a previous owner did. If it's cast, then I don't know. Got any to show us?
On a side note, this pic is of my .375 SM. My .357 SM also has a "40" cast into the frame, I assume DW used the exact same frames between the two calibers, with only a change in barrel/cylinder & the appropriate roll marks.
