New member here and new to DW's. Have a small collection of Colt and S&W revolvers but a buddy wants to sell his Model 15 (no dash) to me. I'll see it later this week. He said it's a 6" stainless. I did some online research but only see a Model 715 being in stainless and some 15's being in nickel plated. He is the original owner and has had it since the early 80's. No extra barrels. Were 15's made in stainless?

7 denotes stainless. If the gun is in fact stainless It would be a 715. It should have an S as the first character in the serial number. If not, it could be a nickel gun. Those are very rare so it would be a good purchase if in good shape.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

If a man designed it, and a man built it, then a man can fix it.

I am sorry for not responding sooner. I was busy with NYE prep. Scorpio is correct except if it doesn't have an S in the serial number it may be an aftermarket hard chromed gun. They actually are more common then factory nickel model 15-2s. Dans are not numbered like Smiths. A 15 is actually very different. There is no official 15-1. If he bought it new in the early 80s it is either a 15-2 or a 715. If it is hard chromed the barrel tube would be blue as would the extractor star and the inside of the cylinder chambers. So would nickel though. Nickel has a yellowish hue. Chrome looks very much like stainless. Dan Wesson stainless guns have a brushed finish. A blued 15-2 would be polished as would the nickel or Chrome. Look for telltale signs of the nickel flaking, bubbling or discoloration. Chrome would not do that.
