I was sharing my recent find (744) with my favorite gun shop and they told me about a model 15 (Monson) blue with 6 & 2.5" barrels, tool, & gapper (is that a word?). They want $325 for it. I asked if it was beat up and he said it has some scratches but not beat up. Seems like with the 2.5" barrel it would make a great glove box gun. Okay, I'm looking for an excuse to buy it. If I'm not buying to collect or show off it seems like a good deal.
Since I don't know the model well can you give any advice besides the basics of how to evaluate a revolver? Thanks in advance.

I could go into a long drawn out tirade on how to do what you want but it would be easier if you look a couple posts above your's. Some real good info there.

Thanks but I know how to tell if a revolver is in good condition. What I need is info on the model. Being made in Monson, does that make it a 15-? How does one tell one model 15 from another? Searched to no avail. It does not have a full barrel lug. I've got them holding it for me but want to arm myself with knowledge before I go see it. I was wrong on the price. They want $350 for it.

If it has a recessed barrel nut it is a 14 or 15 series (14 is fixed rear sight, 15 is adjustable rear). If it has the footed or "porkchop" shroud it is a 14/15 or 14-1/15-1. If it has a straight shroud it is a 14-2/15-2. The -2 series is the most commonly found.
Here is some history:

Earlier -2 guns have recessed chambers that enclose the cartridge rim and an overtravel adjusting screw in the trigger.
Sounds like a good deal, I would check to make sure the barrel nut can be removed. If it's stuck you can overcome this, but it's a pain to do and would be a strong bargaining point.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Good info Steve. Thank you. Does being made in Monson mean anything regarding the particular model? Can't wait to check it out.

I passed on the model 15. If it had VH barrels and included a 4" (for the glovebox) I probably would have bought it. Decided on a barely used Springfield Armory XD45 (13+1) for the glove box. Got it for $395 with the kit (two mags, speed loader, mag holder, holster). She's already clean & lubed, loaded with Federal HydraShock ammo and sleeping on top of my owner's manual in my glove box. I'll swap mags monthly to keep the springs good. Because I can't have a gun a work this will suffice so I can have one in my car. Also good for business travel which takes me out in the sticks and overnight. Probably a good decision so now my Valor and 744 don't have any more DW competition in the dark of my safe
