Hi Guys,
I was walking around at a local gun show and came across this bad boy. Now let me say that I've never owned a DW, but have heard nothing but good things about them. I've also never seen a 15" revolver before (and I have a soft spot for stainless wheel guns)...so with those two facts combined, I couldn't leave without it. It even came with a really nice leather holster, which is stamped with the maker's name, so that was an added bonus! I was one of the first few people through the door, so I bought it...and it got tons of attention the whole time I was there.
Anyhow, I was wondering if you guys could tell me anything about this gun. I think it is a model 715, but have no idea when it was made (SN begins with SD01), how common the 15" barrels are or what its worth. Any help that you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. Either way, I'm pretty excited to have this thing (even if it is a little impractical, to say the least.) Thanks!

Welcome to DWF, please visit New Members and tell us more about you and your 715.
SD01 could be anywhere from 1983-1986, full S/N without the last 1-2 digits will help pin it down. The 15" is pretty uncommon and a highly sought item. I don't keep track of market on something like this, at a guess the 15" SS B/A is probably $400, maybe?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I could see where that "bad boy" in that holster strapped on the side would draw some attention! But don't expect to win any quick draw comps with that.
Nice DW, welcome. I seem to recall that a blued 15" B/A went for nearly $1400 on the auction site a couple of months ago, some blued 10's and 12's from $600 to $1000. So a SS 15" B/A would be ...

That's a nice setup you got there and I'm betting you walked out of the show with it for a fraction of what that barrel would draw at auction. The holster is a super nice one-off creation. I'd say you had a very good day at the show.....far better than most of us have seen in a very long time.

Wow it sounds like I really lucked out. I didn't pay much at all (much much less than what a new 715 would cost). Glad I took the chance! I can't believe the 15" barrels sell for that much (and I can't even find a current sale of a stainless version), but am glad to hear it! Looks like I finally got a good buy at a gun show...I usually just see table after table of current production stuff and old junk that people are trying to move. To be more specific, the SN is SD0151XX.
Thanks for all the info so far. Now I just need to find a decent tree branch to prop this thing on and try it out!

I usually check ebay several times a week to watch for prices on barrels- I have only seen 10" Stainless for sale on ebay.
Blued 2 1/2" $200+, 4" $250+, 6" $250+, 8" $275+, 10" $500, 12" $900+, 15" $1200+
I have never seen a 15" Stainless for sale- be confident that it would easily be worth more than $1200 on ebay.
I am guessing you got a good deal on that great looking DW. I wish I was one spot in front of you at the gun show. It would be interesting to know what you paid for it, if you are willing.

Wow that is great. Thank you for the info! I'd rather not say exactly how much I paid, but I will say that it appears that I'll never stumble across such a deal again!
I should mention that the guy that sold it to me was liquidating an estate collection and he didn't know anything about the gun. He just knew that I had cash...and he wanted cash. I wish I had more on me, as he had several nice old Smiths that I wouldn't mind adding to my collection as well.

+1 on SMF's estimate. You are correct. Unlikely you will ever get a deal like that again. However, they are very unwieldy . The were used for Silhouette shooting usually in the Creedmoor position where you lay flat on your back with your feet facing the target. You rested the barrel on your outside calf and propped your head up with the opposite arm. A heavy leather piece protected your calf from the blast from the gap.. If you use a prop you should pad it so as to not mar the shroud.

What markings are on your barrel? 2 lines including Dan Wesson Arms and 357 ctg, would mean it is a Monson made barrel shroud and probably the most valuable.Yes, it is marked as you described.
And that leads me to believe that this barrel may very well be original to the gun. Nice score! Thanks for showing it off.
