I just bought a model 744 first edition made in Norwich N.Y. does anybody know what type of grips this came with from factory

First welcome to the 
I have several first editions and they either come with smooth walnut/hardwood grips or the Hogue rubber finger grove grips.

Dogtrailguy and congrats on your first Dan! Won't be your last. I have a First Edition 744 and it shoots great. Mine came with the Hogue rubber grip and a VH6 barrel. How about your, oh I have a solution 
.

The best part is.... it doesn't matter what it came with from the factory, because before you know it, you'll have purchased every grip you can find that will fit it 🙂
