I've noticed that some .357 Monson 2-1/2" barrel shrouds have a curved underlug cut and some have a straight cut. Why have a different cut between Standard and Vented? Presumably, the Heavy goes all the way flush with the muzzle?
Any information greatly appreciated. Here are some current examples on FeeBay;

Straight is for heavy underlug, curved for light underlug. Look at pistol packs, needed some form of differentiation and for an ascetic point, very nice.
That's what I told someone on FeeBay that was selling one with a straight cut and he assured me that Heavy's went out flush with the muzzle crown. I checked Jody's "What model do I have?" thread and his pic showed a Heavy 2-1/2" with it being flush.
My PP from 1979 is a 15-2 Vented and the 2-1/2" shroud has a straight cut. Thus the reason for this thread.

I believe the Heavy underlug ba's are straight cut and most were vented.
The standard underlug is cut up at end and will match the cut on the longer ba's, just past ejector slot.
It is too short to see the "standard ba look". And could be vented or not.
No PP to check, but I think this is true.

The pics he has tagged, show a vented barrel assembly. Why one also has a concave cut line I don't know? Maybe I'm not done with collecting yet also.
Excellent catch !
After enlarging the pics of the curved cut, it is indeed a Vented shroud. Mystery continues ...

OK I will try.
Heavy under-lug= square at the muzzle regardless if it is vented or not.
Half lug or standard curves up just after the ejector slot regardless if it is vented or not.
On a 2 1/2 shroud the curve ends at the 2 1/2 point.
The exception to this is some of the fixed barrels have a similar bevel at the muzzle.
Some where on here are pictures of all that, but I seem to have issues finding them right now.
Hope this answers the question.

Yeah, there used to be a link showing all (or most) of the various barrel configurations, but it's gone now. I don't know if it got eaten during a site update or what.
I think a former Smith and Wesson employee must have started working for Dan Wesson and it slipped past quality control. You could put it on ebay and say Rare, Rare, Rare and get twice the going rate. Seriously, standard and vent have the slanted cut regardless of the rib. Heavy and vent heavy the lug is flush with the muzzle. Fixed barrel lugs were like the heavy but with a slant at the end regardless of length. I believe they also sold some of the fixed barrel types separately during the Palmer years. I have a stainless 3 inch and a stainless 6 inch with the full lug and slanted cut. I also have a blue Norwalk 3 inch heavy Lug. I consider the 3 inch priceless. Haha. Consider the 3" Python. I'm so funny. One day I may build a 3,5,7 pack. Still need a 5 and 7.

Let me try this
Good examples!
Those are both standard shrouds...the top is non-vented & the bottom vented. Heavy shrouds will have the same options on the top rib, but will come straight out & squared off at the bottom...just like the longer barrel versions do.
