Hey guys.
Just a quick question.
I am about to go take a look at a Monson 744VH with a 6" barrel. The owner is not very familiar with DW and I asked questions that lead me to believe it is, in fact, a 744VH with a minimal amount of use.
What is a reasonable price for this revolver if condition is accurate? I failed to ask about box, barrel wrench, etc., so I don't know if these will come with it or not.
Thanks.

The 44's usually go for between $450 and $550 for blued and the stainless are $50 to $100 more, box instructions and tool/gauge add about $20 to the total. Price depends on condition and where made, with Monson in good shape being a preferred model followed by Norwich and last Palmer. Where it's made, is on the frame below and forward of the cylinder. Good luck.

Thanks for the input robhof.
I decided to go ahead and pick this one up. It was definitely used, but in very good shape and has been well taken care of. The present owner said he hadn't shot it much, but the previous owner apparently did. At least it was indeed a Monson 744VH.
It came with a boatload of extra stuff that I could use anyway. Came with a reloading manual, a couple new speedloaders, 250pcs. of new brass, and 500 Laser Cast 240gr SWC bullets. Also had 100 Hornady 300gr XTP bullets, 100 Nosler 300gr HP bullets, 100 Cast Performance LBT type 300 grainers, and a new set of carbide RCBS dies.
I feel like it was a pretty good score- which is all that matters, I supppose.
Hey Chris,
So what did you have to give for it if you don't mind me asking? I recently sold a 744-V6 on GunBroker for $600 with a barrel wrench. They guy had to pay $68 for shipping if I remember. He was an FFL so didn't have any fees on his end.
Also nice when you pick up one with all the extra goodies like you described above!
Post some pictures when you have time...

Well, here is the Dan I picked up yesterday. I need to 86 the rubber grip though.
I also just went into a panic since I noticed the ports in the top of the shroud. Thankfully, the barrel doesn't have the ports. I was a bit worried as I've read that shooting cast bullets through a barrel with the ports is a perfect recipe for stuck barrel shrouds.
Anyway, here is a lousy picture of the new to me 744, keeping my 40 from getting lonely.

Charger Fan- Thanks!
You are correct- the current grips are Pachmayr Presentations. I don't know, I just can't stand a rubber grip. Would be beneficial if I took it hunting in questionable weather, but I only hunt paper (for now).
Oh, BTW... I appreciate the link on those grips in my other thread.

You're welcome for the link. I usually prefer wood grips too, but I'll admit that I'm liking my Pachmayr's a lot more than I thought I would.
I'm a paper hunter too, for the most part...well, that & plastic milk jugs full of water, beer cans, old car rims, whatever. LOL! Sometimes it's fun chasing things around the hillside with bullets.

That's an unusual grip on your 40, as none of the DW plants offered checkered grips for the large/supermag frames.
robhof- I was wandering around Gun Broker last night and noticed another 40V8S with the exact grips mine has on it. Maybe this was an early style grip (pre 80's) or something?
The extra barrel wrapping paper that came with mine was dated June 1979.

Here we go, I knew if I slept on it, I would remember where I saw the brochure with those grips. LOL!

I would think that your gun was probably born with that grip. Although, this brochure looks like it may have been printed later than '79, so who knows. That's just my best uneducated guess. LOL!
