It's been awhile since I've been able to go to the range, but I was off today and it was about perfect...80 degrees and light winds with sunny skies.
Had a lot of testing to do in several silhouette guns, but I got the .445SM out just after lunch. The afternoon light is better for iron sights then. All I've ever shot in this cannon were the favorite Sierra 250 grain FPJ's, and a few Hornady 300 grain XTP's. Had some 240 grain loads to test for quite sometime, just never got around to it.
Both of these loads were identical, except for the bullet. IHMSA brass, 36 grains AA-1680, Federal 155M primer. The two bullets were the Speer 240 grain TMJ and the Hornady 240 grain JTC-SIL. First up was the Speer. My ram setting is 39 clicks from the bottom, so I started there. First shot I heard steel ringing, so I finished a group. Of course, I shot from the creedmoor position . I loaded another cylinder, and shot 5 more on the next ram then checked the groups.
Both were pretty nice groups, about what I would expect from a tried-and-true load. Then I shot the Hornady bullet. Had to come up 2 more clicks to hit the ram before I shot two groups. Actually, they were more like patterns...not real consistent. Since the load was safe, I shot the rest of them for fun, standing at 200 meters...even hit a few rams. Sure beats pulling bullets at home! 65 rounds went downrange. Man I really like this big revolver!
Next up, after a brief rest, was the SRS in .41 Magnum.
This one was just rechecking sight settings today, then doing a little practice. The 210 grain Hornady silhouette bullets were right where they should be at all 4 distances. Only 50 rounds were expended in practice, all but one target went down. I have to say, after the .445SM, this one felt like a .38 Special...very pleasant to shoot. With the other stuff I had to shoot, the other two Dan Wessons never got the call. They will go out next time. Tomorrow is our Silhouette Match.
