Well, today's a great day. Today, I'm a multiple DW owner, with one BIG 357 & one average sized 357. Laugh LOL!

A member here was gracious enough to offer his super clean, unfired, slightly "Barneying" Model 40 357 Supermag for sale.    On Feb. 13th, I said "I'll take it"...almost one month to the day later, my FFL guy said "come & get it"!

Why so long? It's entirely my fault...I chose to send my money order payment with FedEx. Then they lost it for me.Surprised If I would have just slapped a "forever" stamp on an envelope & mailed it, I'm sure I could have avoided what turned into a headache to get my money to the seller. My seller was very patient & understanding too, for that I'm grateful.

So I got home with my new baby, grabbed my camera & took this pic on the porch, before the last bit of daylight disappeared. Man, this thing looks good.Cool

It's a Monson gun, # E00392X

The finish is 99.6% flawless! It does have the slightest hint of some Barney in it, if you hold it up to the sunlight...but I'm not holding that against it, so that's this baby's new name.Laugh

Check this out. I'm not sure why this small piece of moisture paper is here, unless merely to show an approximate manufacture date.

What looks like rust here, is actually old, dried grease. I can't see that there's ever been a round fired through it & the top strap is unmarked by any flame cutting.

Man, I am one happy camper today!

I've got Reed's whipping me up a couple boxes of 180 grain jacketed bullets as we speak & can't wait to send some of those down the pipe. Smile

That's what mine looked like 15 yrs ago.  Man that's a real gem.  The best part is sighting it in at 100 yds and only having to hold over a few inches for 200 yds. or sighting in at 150yds and be minute of deer from 50 to 200+yds.  Happy shooting and congrats on your find.

Nice new hog leg you got there. Let us know how she tears up the targets at up the range.

What a great find - that's a beauty, "date stamped" and all.  BTW, what is the year on the paper?

After shooting CDF's the other day, I can say with high confidence that you are going to LOVE that Supermag. Kiss

Charger,

She (or uhh, he) is a beaut- LOL. Cool

You shall enjoy shooting that one. Please give a report on that Reed's Ammo once you receive it and shoot a few. Enquiring minds want to know!

Congratulations, and enjoy- it's a nice one.

Thanks, you guys!Laugh

Dusty, the paper is stamped Feb 1992. I'm going to unwrap the extra barrel tonight & see if it's got any dates on the paper.

CDF, I'll report back on the ammo. I ordered a box of Hornady XTP 180g, and a box of Hawk jacketed 180g. I was gonna get some 225g Hawk's, but the price is something like $6 more a box…I decided to try those later.

CF:

Congrats, it looks beautiful.  Mine (357 SM) should arrive today or tomorrow.  I can't wait.  Also a Monson gun SN: E004460 -- but mine's stainless.

Would someone please explain why, when giving out serial numbers, many people substitute x's for the last couple of digits?  Are we afraid that someone (big brother) is taking names?

Maybe I'm not paranoid enough Laugh though many think I am.

Charger,

Man, ammo has become unbelievably expensive. Just as a point of reference for you, I am rolling my own and it costs about $.54 a shot right now using Sierra 180gr. Sil bullets.

I figure the next 500rds I load, the cost will drop to $.35 a shot since I won't have any need to purchase brass. It is expensive to get started reloading, as you have noticed, but if you shoot quite a bit of ammo, it won't take long to to recover the up front costs for the reloading equipment. I forsee myself shooting quite a few 357 Max rounds.

I do it because yes, I'm mildly paranoid.Embarassed I doubt Big Bro is watching our little site, but who knows if some scammer type is…and what they may be able to scheme up, if they had serial numbers. I know others here are fine with giving & showing their numbers, so I would say they're less paranoid than me.Laugh LOL!

I guess it's the same as showing your license plate on the internet. Some have said that it may open you up to internet fraud, but others say it's no different than driving your car around, displaying your plates for all to see.

The serial number thing is quite possibly much ado about nothing, and I'm probably just being dumb about it.

I'm looking forward to seeing your new toy.Cool

I agree, ammo costs these days are disgusting. I plan to get myself into some reloading gear here soon, gotta get some other financial crap out of the way first.

I'll be picking all the reloader's brains here shortly, as if I haven't already.Wink

Very nice Supermag in gorgeous condition! A stainless Supermag silhouette was my first Dan Wesson, and still my favorite. With renewed vigor, I am looking for a companion blue version to go with it.

Holy Carp!

You're giving me a severe case of DWAS.  I didn't know that I had to match up each of these with a blue version!  Confused

My wife is gonna kill me.

I thought it was '92 but could not be sure.  Maybe that paper didn't originally come with the gun, as Palmer production came on line in '90 and the gun is Monson built.  A mystery?

Well lookie here!

I unwrapped the barrel halfway tonight & it seems I was off by a decade...woops.Embarassed This barrel wrapper clearly says 1982, and the papers match each other, so it appears I read that digit wrong. After looking at it super close, I can sort of see a little more of the "8", because the top hoop is smaller than the "9" is.

At least this date will make more sense with the Monson build.
