So I just bought what I think is a really nice Dan Wesson pistol pack.
I think (based on random internet searches) that it is a model 15-2. It says Monson on the side, and the model number is 2724XX. It came with 2.5, 4, 6, and 8" barrels, all in fantastic shape. It also has the stock barrel tool, and extra wood grip and gap measurer (okay, so I don't know the technical word for that). No buckle or patch (which I have seen with some). I probably paid too much for it, but it seemed like a decent price to me ($600).
So I came here looking for more information on it. I bought one because I shot a couple matches with a guy who had a DW with a custom shroud (and barrel?) on it. It had flat sides and looked pretty slick. I was impressed by this gentleman's gun, because the trigger was super nice (compared to my ruger… but I guess that's not saying much).
So does anyone make custom barrels and shrouds anymore? How about sights (all of my barrels have the same orange painted ramp)? What kind of speedloaders does it use? Anybody got advice on a holster (for the snub barrel)?
I'd also appreciate any advice you guys have for me. It's not my only revolver, but it's the oldest, it has the longest barrel (and the shortest) of my handguns and is my first blued gun.
Okay, I'm going to shut up now, I just got a little too excited.
Oh, and I also heard a random internet rumor that somebody makes a better barrel nut tool than the stock one (something about the stock one scratching the barrels or some such). Any opinions on that one?

Welcome to the forum from the hills of Tennessee, what you need to do is enjoy your purchase, DW are some of the best shooting revolvers ever made, I think they are the best, I have had mine over 30 years and it shoots today just like it came out of the box 30 years ago. Enjoy!

You got a very good price on your 1979 Dan Wesson Pistol Pack. Holsters and speedloaders for a Smith K or L frame should work very well, and I strongly recommend the EWK barrel removal tool.
Are your front sights actually orange painted, or is there a red plastic insert in each one (which is the normal item)?

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Wow, thanks for all the replies so fast. I'm going to have to wait a week and a half before I get out to the range... it's going to be tough.

You're right, it's definitely a plastic insert and it's red not orange. I wasn't looking at the sights very closely.
Can somebody give me an explaination on why I need the EWK barrel tool vs the stock one? Just wondering.

You don't really NEED the EWK tool if you have the stock one. Some people (probably most here) prefer it and if, like me, you don't have a barrel tool then it provides a cheaper option than the official one that Cz offers.
If I had 20 dollars for every time I've been held at knifepoint, I wouldn't have been stabbed by that guy for not having any money.

EWK has taken the nut removal to the next level! if your pac has the plastic one, put it away and save as a part of history. The EH that EWK builds and sells will give you the heavy front end to control the jump! Small investment years of enjoyment! Show us that pac!!!!! below is a custom EWK EH slotted on a 14-2 molly coated!

You do NEED the EWK tool--it save you from a lot of crying when you break the plastic one trying to remove/tighten the barrel nut... And, due to its better fit, it prevents you from messing up the barrel nut.
Buy an extra, you'll be glad you did--I have them with my DW's, on the bench, in my range bag, etc...

^^^ This... I was well served by my stock plastic tool until I used it in an attempt to free a really stuck nut on a gun I bought... yep it broke. The plastic gives way under pressuse. Age might also be a factor... it was 30 years old after all, and plastic doe not age well.
EWk also sells those fancy EXTRA heavy shrouds and 1/12 twist barrels to agument the 1/16 stock ones. LB sells custom crafted grips for function or display ( or both). EWK also sells fiber optic sights .. which is all I use now.
Oh and Welcome!!!!

I personally have never broken one of the plastic barrel nut tools. However, if you ever get a stuck barrel nut the plastic one may well prove inadequate. I have EWK barrel nut tools for both the small and large frames and pilots for all calibers. These reside in my range bag.
What do you need next, you ask.
Well, my guess would be about 12 more Dan Wesson's.

Finding a factory DW plastic wrench with no hairline cracks in it is a rarity anymore...
I have a few Virgin ones in my Pacs for show. I use the all steel wrenches for daily use.
When you get bored, pull out some of the plastic wrenches and give them a HARD look with some backlighting. You may need a magnifier if you have old eyes ...
you will probably see some very small cracks when you look.

IMHO, the EWK tool is machined more precisely, and is a better fit to the barrel nut, to allow easier removal of the barrel nut EVERY TIME. A very regular problem with the DW barrel system is a "rounded off" or stuck barrel nut, and proper use of the EWK wrench will go a long way towards eliminating this problem.
You got a really nice looking Pack at a great price.
