I was on my way to a part-time security job and stopped off at the bank I do business with. Being in unform with all the bells and whistles on or attached always attracts unwanted attention. From being a lawman for many years, I have grown accustomed to the "looks" and "stares" received while out in the public in uniform. I thought some of the DW Forum Members would find this particular moment-in-time for me, interesting. In my duty holster rested my blue steel Dan Wesson Model 11 with a four-inch barrel with the original walnut DW "Combat" Grips on. In part-time work I will sometimes slip my 11 with those described DW wood grips, into my duty holster. Maybe for nostalgia reasons and also the great grip-hold the originals provided me. When I started in law enforcement (1971) guns like this were common on cops. Not anymore! It is something akin to an episode out of "The Twilight Zone" seeing a cop with a revolver nowadays. While inside the bank, standing in line, I noticed the bank teller in the line I was in leaning way over the counter looking/staring at me! I started getting a little "jumpy" as I scanned the area out looking for "something" that could turn into ugly in a second! I thought, at first, the teller was trying to communicate with me without speaking out loud. The line moved on down, with nothing happening, and as I got to the teller's window-counter, he started smiling at me and told me about his cop-Dad. It seems his father had been a cop back in the 80's and carried a blue steel .357 with wood target grips and seeing my gun riding in my duty holster brought back some good memories of his Dad. He said that when he was a little boy, his Daddy would supervise him while he held his Dad's unloaded big .357 Magnum Revolver with big wooden grips on it. His Dad was gone now and seeing this old elderly cop, standing in his line, with my Dan Wesson Model 11 and the wood Combat Grips on it, reminded him of his cop-Daddy and apparently the memories were good.
I know this is not exactly something that falls in line with the DW Forum protecol but I thought that maybe a few would find this a little bit interesting. An old cop, on his way to a part-time security job, brings some good memories to a young man with my old Dan Wesson .357 sticking out of my duty holster and being around the same age as his deceased Dad. This gun has really afforded me some wonderful moments-in-life! One of the best ever didn't involve gunning down some young cops at the firing range or some other great feat of shooting skill. It didn't require one shot! Just being at the right place, at the right time, with the right person! I looked like the cop his Dad was and my gun played a big part in bringing back some wonderful memories a young man had of his Dad! I'm so thankful we both were there for him!
Thanks my friends...........................David
