Well here finally are the pics of my new to me Monson Dan Wesson 15-2 with 6 inch heavy barrel. I have already swapped out the grip for a Gripper and love the control it gives me. My first outing I basically fell in love with the thing, heck I wish there was a way I could use it as my concealed carry. From 30 feet without even really trying 6 shots of .357 in a group small enough to cover with the bottom of a soda can was not bad. Heck the thing shoots better than my SIG P220 and that is saying quite a bit.
The pic does not really show it but there is some significant finish wear and even a couple of small nicks in the shroud so I think I am going to refinish it. However considering it will be my regular mountain carry I think I will opt for a Duracoat finish instead of rebluing. I am going to have a family friend make a holster for me I think. I also am going to keep my eyes pealed for one in stainless with a vented heavy barrel.

Very nice, I really like the Gripper as well. If you want to get it re-blued, DWF Member hotbluer was a Dan Wesson bluer, and has done excellent work for people here.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Congratulations on your new piece, Hawkeye. Great looking Dan! What's your angle on "mountain carry" that you briefly mentioned? Fill us in! Thanks,
PCC
Well basically around these parts none of the locals head into the mountains without at least a good pistol on their hip if not a rifle. It doesn't matter if you are camping, hiking, fishing or actually out hunting you go armed. The cougar population in particular has really exploded out here do to some of the more recent hunting restrictions. There are also of course bear, wolves and a fair number of wolverines moving into the area. Oh and the occasional pot farmer that decides to take shots at you. This has actually happened to me before. Heck a few years ago we had illegals up there mushroom hunting and they would shoot at people that got to close to the areas they were working.
Mostly I have carried my SAA in .45LC when in the mountains but this may just take its place. However I may go down to a 4 inch barrel for mountain duty I am just not sure yet I really like the balance of the 6. Basically you just want a tough, accurate pistol that you can use if something happens.

Hawkeye,
Real nice 15 you have there. Sounds like you have the stainless bug as well. (I love my 715. )
On an unrelated note, you are worrying me some. My oldest boy (30) is moving to Colorado this summer. He loves hiking and camping. Of course he thinks nothing will ever happen and that no animal will ever attack. So, what part of the mountains are you in? (Not that it really matters as I'm sure there are mountain lions, bobcats, black bears and probably brown bears and eventually wolves where he likes to go.) I realize the danger is remote but if it happens, he is far away from help. I guess what I'm really asking is "Is there anyway I can effectively encourage him to carry while hiking?" Thanks in advance.

Well I would be further north from him up in the Blue Mountains in Oregon not far from the Idaho border (little over an hour away). Our biggest wildlife issue is the cougars/mountain lions because their population in the area is just exploding. Heck I get them down by my house on the edge of town as well. We also take our dogs up in the mountains quite a bit so there is always the danger of one of them being attacked as well.
Granted even running across a moose, deer or elk could prove to be dangerous if they feel threatened. Granted I don't think he would have to worry about moose that far south.
Last year alone there were 6 pot farms found up in the mountains around me by hikers and hunters. One in particular was extremely large and they connected back to one of the cartels in Mexico. So that has become a real threat up here and is one of the major reasons people in this area carry.
Heck even before I met her my fiance would carry up in the mountains when she went up with her family. As for your son is he firearms friendly at all? If not it could be a very hard sale. I would just present some of your concerns and ask if he has ever thought of them. Many people don't seem to think there are any dangers in the wild for some reason, I guess they think the woods are like they see in Disney. Also though he would need to check his local laws about carrying. Here in Oregon I can open carry around town if I wanted.

One of Eric's 4" barrels has the weight/balance without the length. I think you'd like it.
