Hi All:

I have been looking for a scope (primarily used for load development but later for hunting) for a 714 I'm installing an 8" barrel with scope mount. I've seen some inexpensive scopes on Ebay and the prices go up after that.

Any recommendations? Any problems with some of the inexpensive offerings I've seen? I don't know how long before I get to the field and let my DW go "hog wild" but for now, I'll be developing some target38 special mid-range loads and some full house 357 magnum rounds if this will help in any possible scope selectionsmile. Thanks in advance.

This is where I shop for used scopes at a good price.  I'm partial to Leupold and fixed power Burris scopes or older Nikon Monarchs (now Encore line).

http://www.samplelist.com/Riflescopes-C4.aspx#Leupold

IMO the differences in quality shows in the first and last 30 minutes of daylight.  Other than that you can opt for NC Star, a hardy scope, or any other less expensive glass.  Check Optics Planet for decent prices.  http://www.opticsplanet.net/riflescopes.html

Hope that helps,

Ron

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

I like the fixed power Burris and leupolds from the 80's to 90's. Here is a 2x leupy on my maximum with a Burris mount. Ironically the mount is worth almost as much as the scope.

You won't beat Leupold or Burris scopes for the long term use and excellent warranties. I have found a number Tasco scopes will hang with the .357 and their price is fairly cheap. Their quality is excellent for the money. Great looking pistol Shooting4life. What kind of mount is that? Nice looking grips too.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I had a Magnum Phantom on my 357 mag and used it for many rounds, actually shot about 1000rounds in one day; my neighbor when I was Active Duty was a Security Police and called me to put on a fld uniform and bring my pistol, seems we were going to have a big inspection and they had an overage of ammo, so we were the destruction team, they needed an unbiased observer(me)range-timerange-timerange-time.  Of course I had to verify each box of ammo was viable and safe for the destruction.  The scope held up fine to many rounds of 38spcl and 357mag govt issue ammo.shootingshooting

I put a Simmons Pro Hunter 4x32 Model 7739 on my Dan Wesson 714's 8 inch tapped barrel shroud using a pair of Weaver 1" medium rings. (49032)

Can't really complain much about it. If I was going to nit pick, I kind of wish I had used a 2x scope instead of a 4x for the shooting that I do, as the magnification is really high. If I was planning on handgun hunting at 100 yards perhaps it would be fine. However most of my pistol shooting is done under 50 yards.

I found that it worked best for me while rested on sand bags. When shooting off hand, I move around too much, and the high magnification really exaggerates that.

I have put a box of ammo through the Dan with the scope on it, and it hasn't broken. To be fair though, I haven't really shot it enough yet to know if it's going to last for the long haul. Recoil is so mild with the 8 inch barrel/shroud that I don't for see any future problems with the scope. Perhaps recoil would be more problematic if mounted on really short barrel assembly.

For an inexpensive pistol scope, it's not bad.I think it looks attractive enough on the gun. The eye relief is somewhat critical on the scope, not really what I would call stellar. The adjustments are crisp and positive, and the scope holds zero. Reticle is small enough for precision target work, yet still clearly visible, with a crisp sight picture. I had no glare problems in bright sunlight due to the coating. The scope might be a bit too dark in really low light conditions, if you were planning on using it for hunting.

If you are looking to try out a starter scope, I would say the Simmons Pro Hunter is worth it for the price. It received decent enough reviews online.

There is also a lot to be said about buying a high quality scope in the first place. I could make a really good argument for just buying it right the first time, and getting a Leupold.

In my case I wanted to test out the waters so to speak, and see if a scoped revolver was the thing for me - so I went with the Simmons. I also tested out an inexpensive red dot scope on the revolver.

I have had numerous "less expensive" scopes on some of my revolvers over the years and traded or sold most of them to stay with Leupold on handguns.  I have never had a problem with the glass, scope moving out of adjustment or any other issue with the Leupolds.  In rifle scopes I have numerous brands that I am happy with, but in revolvers I am a Leupold believer.

Just my experience and opinion.

Bullwolf & SMF,

Thanks for the responses, the picture is definitely worth 1000 words. Thanks also for the info on the magnification and light concerns.

Leupold's are awesome but I'm not sure if I'm into that level of sophisitication /$$ for the starter scope, however it may be the end result.

I'm to the point where I would like to test the waters. The Simmons prohunter model I was looking at has a 2-6 variable magnification and is available in SS and matte for $129. The eye relief is listed at 20 inches which seems to be right in my zone. I would prefer not to drill and tap and have been looking on EB and GB recently for clamp style mounts.

There is a M Buehler scope mount:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=322068678

listed but I haven't been able to pry any details so far.

I see some of the drill & tap models are good for both frame sizes, are there clamp models that would be good for both 357 and 44?

Any other thoughts that might be helpful in my decision?

Thanks again for your feedback!

Greetings

Have used Leopold and Redfield with 2x being the highest power.  I hunt river bottoms and thickets so long shots do not happen.  2x is good enough at my ranges to slick a chunk of lead through a hole or between trunks.

But lately I have used a Micro-Dot.  Costs about the same as a used 2x but gives much faster target aquisition.  That one simple dot does all I need to get a fast and precise round on target.  Have used it ti sight in a 454 BFR and my 414 SM.  It will easily handle the .357 recoil.

Picture with the ProHunter after tuning in and scope mount adjustment, ended up with a very nice group at 50 yards. The education continues! Do you have any idea how fun this is?

Thanks again for the feedback!!
