In anticipation of sending a rechambered 9mm cylinder and crane assembly to the platers, I would like to know how one does it. In particular, the cylinder needs to come off of the crane and the ejector assembly/star removed. The schematic diagram for the DW medium frame (22/38/357) doesn't really say except the end of the ejector rod is screwed into the assembly that throws out the shells when you push back. Does one use vise grips when gripping down the ejector rod before turning the cylinder clockwise or counterclockwise? I do not want to experience an incident in which i ended up marring the ejector rod assembly by having vise grip teeth marks being left on a part. A kind assist is appreciated. Thanks. DW41F.

I put the ejector rod in a vise, between 2 pieces of thin wood, so as to not mark the ejector. Screw the cylinder counterclockwise to remove. I usually put a couple empty shells in the chambers to support the star when unscrewing, especially if it is very tight.

Mike mentioned a good tip a while back......grip the ejector rod with a drill chuck. If you have an extra drill chuck hanging around, grip the ejector rod at least half way up toward the cylinder, tighten it up, and spin the cylinder counterclockwise. It works great and doesn't mar up anything up. If you don't have a drill chuck, a piece of leather in a set of vice grips works well also.
