I just joined because I'm thinking of buying a DW revolver, but I've never seen this type of barrel nut. I sure it's common to you folks that's why I'm asking here. I don't have a picture but there are two revolver with this barrel nut in the banner at the top of the page. The are in the forth and fifth pictures after the "Dan Wesson Arms" banner.
The revolver is at a local gun shop and it in about 90% condition or maybe a little better. I have not had it in my hands yet but the tag says .357 Magnum. Asking price is $450.00. I had a DW 15 quite a few years ago and gave it to my brother. His wife has since claimed it and shoots it on a regular basis. I've pretty much settled on the .38 spcl/.357 as my one handgun cartridge so I'm going to get a couple more revolver in that caliber. The Dan Wessons seem to be a good choice for me.
I'd appreciate any information on the barrel nut, wrench needed, and the asking price of the revolver I'm looking at.

First, welcome to the forum. Please stop by the New Members thread and introduce yourself and tell us a little more about your shooting style, etc.
As to the barrel nut, a pic would really help but it sounds like you may be describing an external nut. Does it look somewhat like a 12 pointed bolt? Those were used on the early model 11 and 12 guns. A pic will narrow it down. The banner at the top rotates to different pics so can't tell by that.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Hi - Welcome. Unfortunately, the order of the pics in the banner appears to be random so when you see the pic you want, just write click on the image, and save it to your hard drive. Then respond to this thread and use the attachment tab to put it in your post.
I'm assuming this is what you're asking about. It's a Model 12 (and that nut is also used on a Model 11).

Thank you very much, folks. Thanks to your replies, I see that it is an early model revolver. I visited the gun store a little while ago and the model number is -W12-. There are 4 digits on the frame under the yoke, but I don't know whether these are the serial number or some manufacturing numbers.
It is in good condition but my internet searching indicates barrel changes may be an issue because of the age of the revolver. Perhaps I would be better served by a later model.

The four digits are the serial number. In general there's nothing wrong with the older DW's (as far as age), they are well built guns. There could be issues with cleanliness, bore conditions, etc. which is more a function of who owned it and how they took care of it. Barrel changes with any DW are becoming an issue - for me 'cuz of the costs! LOL.
I am confused about the barrel change discussion. I have rarely seen a shot out Dan Wesson barrel. If it was well worn because of use as opposed to age, it is easily replaced at a small fraction of the cost of any other revolver. The model 11 or 12 uses the longer barrels as opposed to the scarce 1/4"shorter barrels of the later porkchops. The Wessons are selling 12 sided nuts of new manufacturing.. I think you could use them on a 14 or 15 porkchop and not need to find a 1/4" shorter barrel too.
