and you're in great hands now. Start here:

If your revolver has an adjustable sight it is a Model 15-2, if the rear is fixed it is a 14-2.
Check the FAQ's on the right sidebar to determine the shroud configuration. For example I have a 15-2 6V (Model 15-2 6" barrel with a Ventilated shroud). Many of your inital questions will be answered with the FAQ's section, especially the one about "How do I post pictures" because
. We're crazy for pictures!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

to the DWF fhgandy! You've come to the right place and we're happy you're here!
A picture would make this REALLY easy. Check the FAQs section on the right side for help in posting a picture.
In the meantime – if it has a fixed rear sight it is a model 14, if it has an adjustable target sight it's a model 15.
I am guessing that you do not have a pork chop shroud (looks like a sideways “L”), so if you don't, it is either a 14-2 or 15-2 and your estimate on purchase date is pretty close to my estimate of manufacture date – which I estimate is late '75 / early '76.
BTW, is the front sight blade fixed or interchangable?
Get us a picture and we'll get you more information!!
edit - SteveCT and i must have been writing at the same time. He's just faster on the draw!
