Hello,

I acquired this gun a few short days ago.  it's a .357 but other than that I know little.  It's not for sale but I'd like to know year made, model #, and estimated price.  This gun is in great condition.  Model number is 38####20150215_101005.jpgImage Enlarger

You have a model 14-2.

Look in the Serial Number Registry link to the right of this screen for an approximate build date.

Welcome! that's a model 14-2 probably 74-75 era.  Probably valued at/ around $350

Somebody will help on date, I would need more of serial number. What you appear to have is an model 14-2 38 special with a 357 shroud. I could be wrong but others will chime in to let you know.

Willy- A model 14-2 in 38 special would actually be a Model 8.  Model 8 SNs don't necessarily start with "38":

Now I'm confused (what's new).  I thought the non-recessed cylinders (recess for cartridge) were Palmer guns, but this one looks like it's marked Monson.  Need some schooling help confused

Try drop down menu, above, under supporters, then serial numbers, there's a link in the form that says this

Full Serial Number Registry

To view the Serial Number Registry in it’s entirety visit this page.

the word page will take you to the serial numbers listing dates.

Many (most?) Monson guns were non-recessed cylinders. No clear date on when this changed to non recessed.

BTW, middlecalf, I'm perpetually confusedconfused.

The bad news is, it does not get LESS confusing. The good news is, once everyone knows how confused you are, they stop asking hard questions, and just understand that you are "special"

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Isn't that a model 8?  A 14-2 would be .357 Mag, or so I thought.  The only differences between the  8/9 and the 14/15 was the chambering, with the 8/9 being .38 Special and the 14/15 being .357 Mag,  at least that is what I have always believed.

Yep- Didn't catch the six digit places.

bigcheesebiker- can you confirm five or six digits in the SN?  It may be as late as 1981...

SCORPIO- see post 7 for model 8 explanation

'81-ish then.  And as I stated in the pic; they were to show that Model 8 SNs don't necessarily start with a 38...
