Just put a Dan .357 Mag on layaway. Monson, Mass., 4-inch barrel, half-lug with checkered wood grips that appear to be proper but lack DW logo. No model marking, just ".357 Magnum CTG". Serial number 9906x Is this a 15 or a 14 or ???

Here are pics:

That is a model 15-2 (adjustable rear sights) .. Model 14 is a fixed rear sight.

thank you. Apparently not all 15-2's were so stamped. Correct? Is the grip original? Seller told me that some did not bear the DW logo.

Very few DWs were ever stamped with the model number. There were also many grip versions, and yes I believe that one is OEM.

I bought my Dan Wesson model 15-2 brand new in 1978.  It came with the exact same grip as you have with no medallion.  It appears there was a brief period where this grip was used.  I have not seen very many over the years.

Those grips are OEM but Dan Wesson had various suppliers over the years. I think those were early 15-2s. The first 15-2s evidently were made in 1974. 1978 might be when you bought the gun but it might have been made much earlier. One of my favorites is the same grip but with a diamond shaped checkered area. I think those preceded your grip. They may have been used on porkchops.
