I have a Dan Wesson Stainless 357 Magnum CTG, with 6 inch barrel, vent rib, adjustable sights. I think it is a small frame as there are joint lines where the frame pieces come together. The serial number is S/001595. I thought it was a 715 but I have a Dan Wesson form letter with it containing authorized repair dealers list and that is dated 1981. Someone told me the 715 was not being made then.
My questions - What is the model? When was it manufactured? What can I expect to get for it if I decide to sell it?
Thanks,
Jim

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but if memory serves the 715 was announced in 1979 and went into production in 1980.
Value is dependant on a number of things like, do you have any or all of the following:
1. Original box.
2. Original barrel wrench.
3. Original gap spacing shim (.006).
Also, the condition makes a major difference.
BTW, welcome Jim. We hope you keep it and stick around. This is the best forum on the net.

715 was introduced in August 1982, and the earliest 715 serial numbers appear to have started with "S". I would say that your form letter is just that, a form letter identifying authorized Repair Facilities for all Dan Wesson revolvers.
Without actually seeing it, I'd say it's a 715.
On the other hand I recently bought a Nickel plated 14-2 that was sold to me by a large shop in my area as a 714 (a Stainless Model) including the official state paperwork and it was shown that way on the BATFE ledger.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Others here are much more knowledgable than I, but it looks to be an early form of "hunters pack". I would try and sell that way. (case, scope and gun).
The gun alone $450 to $600
Scope and mount - guess here $250 - $350
early small DW case $130 - $180
As a set $750 - $1000
Your dad has great taste in guns. You will be hard pressed to replace that, if you ever desired to.

Thanks Pinetor. Unfortunately the case is not a DW. Your thought on it being part of a Hunter's pack is interesting. Did you say that because of the case?
My Dad bought this set from a friend who had won it in a raffle. Dad has had it since about '93.
The scope is a Leupold M8 4X - would that have been part of the hunter's pack?

That appears to be an MTM case... If you decide to sell it, you may want to find a barrel/shroud combo for the gun, and sell the scoped barrel/shroud separately. I'd have to look back through all my paperwork, but I don't remember if the hunter Pacs came with scopes as an option.

Shoot, wouldn't it be common for the scope to be tapped in the frame also?
I have really no idea on the scope other than the guess.
Willyboys, if you end up wanting to do as Shoot suggests PM me and maybe we can work something out (I have a spare 6" SS BA). I know you want to do the best you can by your dad. A good approach is to just watch Gunbroker for a few weeks and get a feel for the market ( which of course changes).

I just looked at the scope mount and what SHOOT says looks correct. It's a Buehler mount and it has 3 screws that go into the shroud. I didn't think about how the tapped holes would affect the value of the gun with the scope sold separate - thanks for that info. I think I will try to sell the package as it is - once I arrive at a fair price. BTW, the case is a Gun Guard brand case. My Dad couldn't remember if it came with the gun when he bought it or it was something he added to the package later. He's 94 years old, so I gave him a pass on that.
Any further input on value would be appreciated. Would the classifieds in this forum be a good way to sell?

Classified on DWF is one good option-you don't pay any auction fees, it a free service for Members. I think you best way to sell that is "as-is". If you're not in a big hurry, it could sell for a pretty nice price. That's a sort of generic base, but a 6" DW with a nicely mounted high quality 4x scope will eventually bring some decent $$$. As a pure DW item, the tapped shroud without the mount and scope loses value.
Wait for someone that wants a really nicely set-up scoped .357 with a quality scope, IMHO
