Hi
I'm a bit of a neophyte. I'm in possession of two gorgeous DW revolvers. A Monson .44mag 8" (sn begins 009) and a "matching" .22. These were purchased in the very early 80's and I shot competition metallic silhouette with the .44 in high school.
I just pulled these two near perfect weapons out of storage 25 years later and went to the range (along with two great BSA Martini action .22LR rifles, damn those are fine too).
Anyway, my question. As I remembered from my HS shooting days the wooden grip on the .44 does not fit my hand well and in fact after 20 or 30 rounds I have a painful bruise on my middle finger. I would like to replace the grip with something suitable for target shooting, probably a rubber grip. The guys at the range weren't real helpful in terms of what grips might fit the frame. I'm not interested in CC (heck its a .44 with an 8" barrel, pretty tough to CC), and I'm not interested in beauty. I'm interested in comfort after lots of rounds and knocking down as many metal pigeons as I can.
What will fit and where can I get one?
Also, I need a replacement barrel tool for my .22 revolver of the same vintage.
Thanks

you will find the hogue grips on e-bay # 58000 for the large frame and the # 57000 for the small frame may cost $15 to$18 a pair, they both feel good and help on felt recoil. as for the tool factory tools can be found but may cost $40 or more on e-bay. We do have a forum member (ewk-stuff) or Eric that is a machinest that makes them to fit the large and small frame guns for changing barrels the nice thing about Eric's is that they have removeablr pilots for the different calibers so one tool will work on all the calibers each frame size. so you could get a small frame wrench and a large freme wrench which will set you up for both guns, and any future expansion into the Dan wessons.
I forgot welcome to the forum and enjoy!

Yes, welcome!!! Sounds like you have some nice Dans there! That's neat you did silhouette shooting with the .44 during high school, I bet that was fun!!!!
I'm the guy that makes the aftermarket wrenches that pops and shoot mentioned, PM me, and we can get you fixed up!!
I'd also recommend the Hogue grip, that's what my .357 has, really nice!!!

n.paperman.
It sounds to me like you already have CC type grips on your .44. You did say that it was killing your flippin' finger. That happens when you can get your finger between the grip and the trigger guard, which is something you cannot do with DW target style grips. I had to buy a pair of shooting gloves to protect my flippin finger from my FA .500WE, however, I've never had to protect my hands from my DW's.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the DW target grips are excellent and good looking as well. I personally don't like rubber grips.
Just trying to offer an alternative.
Otherwise, just check eBay and GunBroker. There are lots of Hogue rubber grips out there.

Yes it was a "blast" quite literally. I'm a math geek. I had like a 3d matrix of like temp, humidty, and wind speed to determine which load to shoot on that day....and at that age I could barely hold the gun up but I was still pretty good. Where I shot in HS my DW was nicknamed "the howitzer" partly because of the loads I shot. It was gratifying to easily knock down targets 100 yards away off hand with iron sights.
This weekend I found my eyes aren't what they used to be 🙁
I'm really hoping to find a competitive shooting scene around here, Atlanta GA.

n.paperman, I did not realise you were another Georgia boy. We are few and far in-between around here. Check out Georgia IHMSA. I haven't shot IHMSA in a long time but the the ranges are going strong. Cherokee Gun Club in Ganesville is probably the closest to Atlanta but they only do Rimfire and Field Pistol. Little River Gun Club in Lincolnton Ga ( my old club) do Rimfire, Field Pistol, and Big bore and is about two hours from Atlanta. The season is over for the year but will crank up in the spring. Any way good luck.

Welcome to the DWF, you're especially lucky to be able to haul a couple of DW's out of storage. Our friend IHMSA80x80 will be along soon, he's not the only "Killer of Steel" here, but is pretty much our resident expert, and the author of a great article on our companion site, The Dan Wesson Collectors Association
When you have a chance, please stop by our New Members section, that would be a great place to put of some pix of your babies. Also, if you are the original purchaser of those, we are trying to build a serial number/original purchase date knowledge base, contributions of this data are always welcome.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
