I just bought a DW .357 SuperMag, 6" barrel. The guy that had it bought it new in 1986, fired it 18 times, put it back in the original box and there it has sat until I bought it. It is definately 100%. I came with a second 6" barrel, no shroud, just the barrel. Anyone know what the second barrel is for?
I am glad for the posts on shooting .38 Spcl's in it. I don't think I would, now will have to check out my local gun shop and see what the least expensive SuperMag ammo is I can shoot.
Thanks, Tom

Congrats on the acquisition I have both a 40 (blued) and a 740 (stainless)and they are awesome guns, a couple of the most accurate revolvers I've ever handled. My understanding of the reason the second barrel was included is that they had bad throat (forcing cone/barrel lands) erosion because of the pressure that the Max operates at, along with where it likes to be loaded (fitting that they call it "the Max"). I have installed my second barrel in my 40 because the first was starting to drop off in accuracy, I put (guessing) 4-5 thousand rounds through mine (and it was bought used) before it started to drop off so don't get worried about it wearing out like a varmint barrel or big magnum rifle. Factory ammo is going to be an issue for you to find, handloading is going to be the easiest for you. thanks for dropping in and sharing with us about your recent purchase.

First welcome to the . Congrats on your new supermag. The second barrel is just an extra in case you wear out the first one and or because of the top strap cutting issue which was the reason the cartridge was no widely produced. you can read all the Stuff about that here. Just stick to heavy bullets and no worries. I hope you reload cause if not ammo may be a little hard to come by but it can be had. Get us a range report and we thrive on pic here so don't be stingy. I am sure the rest will be along shortly to welcome you to the group.

EDIT: Superdan beat me to the punch. I was slow on the draw again. LOL

Thank you for your inputs, and yes I will visit the new member section and do a bio. I will take pix as soon as I unpack, just got back from a vacation. The guy I bought the gun from had ammo but I passed on it, maybe I should have bought it too. Tom

Congrats on your new score! Maybe pop into the Introduction area & say hi when you get a minute...do you have any other DW's?
These guys covered your barrel question, I'll cover the ammo question. You'll probably not find any Maxi ammo near you, but you can order loaded ammo from these guys...
Those 180 grain bullets are best for minimal wear on your gun. Reed's contact info can be found on the right on this screen, in the "FAQ's" section..."where can I get ammo".

I'd get a hold of him and get the ammo...

Unless it's 158g or lighter, then I'd pass...unless it was super cheap, then I grab it & probably not shoot it.
BTW, I forgot to add that Reed's is probably still fairly backlogged. My last order took almost 4 weeks. However, if you call, they may be able to tell you a better idea of an expected ship date.

Tommy, great score on the model 40, your going to love it.
The lighter bullets did aid a little more in the top strap errosion. But after a ways the flame cutting stops.
The real problem with the lighter bullets was they erroded the forcing cone in the barrel, sometimes even chipping out tiny little pieces. The lighter bullets slamming into the end of the barrel at super fast speeds would cause real problems. In the Rugers it was a trip back to the factory for replacement. The DW's were a home remidy, as the extra barrel came with most Max guns.
I don't shoot any bullets under 158grs. The 158's work well for me but I don't push them to extreme velocitys either.

The supermags really shine with the 180 to 200 gr bullets and work well with cast. I use an LBT 200 LFN GC that is a real tack driver out to 200 yds. I've had mine since 1992 and just recently sent it in for a tune up. It's had many rounds through it. You can find brass on the auction sites, there's plenty of the old Remington brass and some Federal around, as it was a very popular IHSMA gun, both the Ruger and the DW. Ruger stopped production when the top strap cutting became a problem, from people pushing 110 gr bullets at 2000+. There are still many Rugers still shooting and plenty of the DW's too and DW/CZ still repairs and has parts for the DW. My 357max was what got me into reloading.

That is a nice score there! My SuperMag was the first Dan Wesson I ever bought, although it is the 8" Silhouette model. Due to the flame-cutting of the topstrap, Dan Wesson provided a second barrel with each .357SM they sold. Few people know that they also included a 50% discount coupon for a THIRD barrel with the gun.
I am not sure if that was provided by Dan Wesson, or the IHMSA organization with guns they sold to the members, because silhouette shooters will go through thousands of rounds in a year's shooting at matches and practice days.
