Hello all  -

New Dan Wesson owner here.  I haven't taken possession yet....the online auction was today and everything still has to be shipped to my FFL.

From what I can tell poking around the site and looking at the serial number records, I have/will have a 1981'ish .44 pistol pack.  This one has a 6" barrel, an 8" barrel, and a 10" barrel, all vent rib.  Is this some sort of "hunter" package?  Most of what I've seen available had a 4" barrel instead of the 10".  The 10" barrel appears to have a full underlug while the others do not, so it may well have been added later.

How difficult is it to find an original 4" barrel and shroud?   I found the EWK site and the 4" barrel assembly that appears to be out of stock at the moment.  Will this new assembly fit my early revolver?

Does anyone know what the "extra" blocks are behind the scope rings on the 8" barrel?

I'm sure I'll have more questions after it arrives......for now, here are the pics from the auction:

You outbid me!   I was willing to go to $2K, but it took so damn long to get to the live bidding, and my $1600 prebid looked like it would hold.  Well, I'm glad it went to a Forum member

Ouch......If it makes you feel any better, none of my prebids on the Winchesters or the S&W revolvers held.  This was the only thing I got.

I was watching that just to see where it went.  Those scope mounts are B Square mounts but I've never seen that particular style from them on a DW. I think those blocks are part of the system and not "extra".  The EWK shrouds will fit and in fact 4" is my favorite length for the 44.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Thank you for the info.  I'll shoot an email to EWK and see if there is a waiting list.....

A big thank you to whoever figured out the string trick to hold the hand and transfer bar together while putting the trigger assembly back in!

Somewhere in the past someone decided that the trigger pull was too hard on this revolver and replaced the trigger return spring with one that was lighter than stock AND cut a coil off.  This resulted in an 18 ounce (!!!) single action pull and inconsistent trigger reset.  The trigger would reset about half the time in single action and maybe 3 out of 4 times double action.  A new return spring was acquired from Numrich, I read every disassembly guide I could find, updated my YouTube gunsmith certification, and set to work.

Time:  40 minutes

Number of failed reassembly attempts:  4

Special tools required:  string, wire tie from a loaf of bread, small paper clip, 3rd hand

The third hand was to insert the paper clip into the trigger return spring guide after replacing the spring.  Even with the trigger guard in a padded vice I needed one hand to compress the spring, one hand to guide the rod through the hole, and one hand to insert the paperclip.  My son stopped by at just the right time.

I found that tying the trigger to the back of the trigger guard in the "fired" position helped when reinserting the trigger assembly.....hence the bread loaf tie.  Once I figured this out it made sneaking the trigger assembly (with the string on!) around the hammer and into position go smoothly.

Replacing the return spring increased the single action pull from 18 ounces to 36 ounces and fixed the return issue.

This morning I got an email from CZ that they had restocked their Dan Wesson parts.  A few minutes later I had a 2.5" barrel assembly, a 4" barrel assembly, a spare wrench, 2 spare barrel nuts, and a full spring set on the way.

Now I just need to figure out how to store/transport all those barrels.....and find half a dozen holsters.

Nice set!  For holsters that fit DW, try Diamond D Holsters of Wasilla, AK.  Very nice holsers and people.

I have a couple of DW Norwich branded holsters. One is a 6 " Supermag swivel holster. When you sit they swivel up for comfort. Bob Serva Era. Unfortunately, it is right handed. When SHTF, I will wear it on the right with a LAR Grizzly on the left. May that day never comesurprised

My new barrels arrived from CZ this week, along with a front sight assortment from EWK.  I hit the range today with the hope of playing the front sight shuffle and arranging things so that I could swap all of my barrels and not have to move the rear sight.

The 8" barrel has a scope on it so it's not part of this discussion.  Happily it turned out to be zero'd exactly at 50 yards with a 240 grain XTP at 1350 fps.

The 10" barrel was also zero'd at 50 yards with my load.  Lucky there.

The 6" barrel had a red ramp front sight on it and was hitting almost 8" high at 25 yards.  This is with the rear sight all the way down against the stop.  I don't know if the rear sight has been messed with to enable longer range zero's or if it is original.  All I know is that the sight was all the way down when I got it.

Replacing the red ramp sight on the 6" barrel with the .350" insert from EWK brought the POI down to 1" high at 25 yards.  Unfortunately it was also 2" to the right.  The "original" front sight had the POI horizontally centered.

The 4" barrel was initially hitting 6" high at 25 yards.  Replacing that sight insert with the .325" insert brought the POI exactly into the X ring.  Perfect both horizontal and vertical.  Yay.

The 2.5" barrel had a POI that was 7" high at 25 yards.  I was out of high front sights by this time so I left it alone and ordered another high front sight from EWK today.  The POI of this barrel also was centered horizontally.

So, the end result is that I now have 3 barrels that hit exactly where I want them to without moving the rear sight at all, one barrel that has the vertical POI set but hits to the right, and one barrel that needs a higher front sight.

I was running out of time and sight inserts, so I bagged it up and called it a day.   More to come after the next batch of inserts arrives.

So from the pictures above I would say that this isn't a Hunter Pack Dan Wesson. A scoped barrel shroud from the factory won't have any power porting and won't be cut for any front sight.

Here's a picture of my Monson era 44 magnum hunter pack 8" barrel assembly. It came with a Burris tapped scope mount and 2X Extended Eye Relief Burris scope.

Nice Hunter Pack II! I probably should have limited my reply to Monson era Hunter Packs, since the original post was about a Monson era Pistol Pack.
