I just bought a beautiful 744-VH pistol pack yesterday , and I was told that the revolver had a timing problem. The pack was being sold at a tempting price, so I bought it anyway. I played with the gun, and checked for proper function and any unusual wear yesterday, and found that in some cases, the cylinder does not lock properly.
In DA, the cylinder always locks properly. Cylinder alignment is perfect. In SA, the cylinder locks when the hammer is pulled back slowly, but not when it's pulled back quickly (not abusively quick). Also, when the cylinder is opened and closed so that the gun is not in full lock up, it is possible to rotate the cylinder freely counterclockwise, so that the bolt skips over every slot in the cylinder.
My best guess is that either the bolt spring or bolt is worn, allowing the bolt to skip over locking slots when the cylinder is rotated too quickly. Does my diagnosis seem accurate? The bolt looks okay, so I want to replace the spring first, but I'm having a hell of a time finding one. Where can I find a new bolt spring for a large frame 744?

Sounds to me like there may just be some gunk internally or the grip screw may be too tight. I don't know of anyone who has worn out a Dan- particularly if it looks to be in good condition. Hope that helps- others will be along shortly.

I disassembled the gun to look for gunk, and found none. Sprayed some lube on the internals, reassembled, and the problem is still there. I've played with the grip screw tension, and the problem remains.
The bolt doesn't look too worn, though there's a shiny streak right down the center. The hand does look like it's seen better days, but I would think that if the hand was the problem, it wouldn't time properly in DA.

Dry everything off inside and re-assemble. May be an issue with too much lube? I dunno- just reaching here. I doubt the hand is an issue either. Eric at EWK, on the right side bar carries small parts kits which include a plunger spring.

Yes, the same. Alot of the same springs in the small and large frame. When I was at
EWK last year for a bluing job Eric and I were discussing this while my 44 was tore
down. He is looking into getting a large frame spring kit together for sale.
But these are the ones that interchange between small and large frames :
# 11 Mainspring
#13 Sight elevation spring
#17 Firing pin spring
#20 Aligning ball spring
#25 Latch spring
#28 Ejector spring
#34 Bolt spring
#43 Hand spring
#46 Strut spring
And these are Large frame only springs:
#41 Trigger return spring
#53 Trigger assembly latch spring

I was unaware of the interchangeability between the frames. I'm having two of mine blued and was going to throw spring kits in them since they were torn down already. The only kits I ever found specifically labeled large frame were from CZ. Of course I don't know if they're up and running yet since the fire.

And you won't until EWK gets one put together and up for sale. The only thing your
getting with the large frame kit is the small frame kit with a different trigger return
spring and an added trigger assembly latch spring.
