I just received a new 4" barrel/shroud from CZ for my 15-2, but it looks like it's going to go back. First of all, there appears to be some machining defects in a couple of the "grooves", giving it the rough appearance of being dirty. (and yes, I've cleaned it a bizzillion different ways) Secondly, upon trying to install it onto the gun, it's bottoming out before it even reaches the feeler gauge. There are plenty of threads left mind you, but it tightens up and refuses to advance any farther. (and I'm not about to force it) So, I'll be giving CZ a call on Monday in hopes of getting a replacement. (shroud is fine) Oh well........

Rut,
I have had similar troubles with a few of the added barrells I bought from CZ and had to send them back for a thread treatment. They always took care of it. I am not sure what the trouble is with the threads on new barrells other than maybe new tooling vs. old tooling?

I just sent one back as well. When I screwed it into the frame at about 1/2 way it came to a grinding halt. After I looked at the threads under a glass you could see a couple of the threads were rough and jagged. It was replaced after I sent it back twice, but....if this is a recurring problem, which it appears is, they need to be checking these with a calibrated thread gauge and not let them get out the door in the first place.

I spoke with the lovely Priscilla at DW/Norwich today re. my dilemma with the barrel, and she informed me I'd have to go through CZ for a replacement, since I'd ordered it through them. After much ado, I finally reached someone at CZ who told me to just send it back, and they'd take a look at it etc. I'm hoping they'll just replace it. In talking with the aforementioned Priscilla, she informed me I could have bought this direct from them (at Norwich) vs. going through CZ, and I fully intend to do that the next time. I also found out they offer much more in the way of barrels/shrouds and general replacement parts that I wouldn't have known were available. For instance, if I want to pick up a new 4" barrel/shroud for my (soon-to-be) M22, they'll gladly build one up to order. (4-5 weeks) So, the bottom line is I won't be dealing with CZ in the future when I can go direct to Norwich.
Rut, here is a link to the DW's contact information along with the latest parts/price list. I've only ordered from CZ's site one time and that's because they had 6" 22 barrels for some really low price. I also talk to the folks in Norwich directly.

I took my new 6" barrel and shroud out last night to put on my new (to me) 15-2, and the nut has been locktited on! I guess I will have to heat it up and pull it off. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with the nut loosening up. I can't think of any other reason to do it. Moron. I'm going to order a new nut in case the threads are messed up, just in case.

I bought an 8 inch barrel for my 15-2 357 used on GunBroker. The nut appeared to have locktite on it also. Heated it up and it came off easily. Cleaned both ends with a stiff brissel hand bruch and solvent cleaner and everything is just fine.
Hope you can get your nut off. That sounds kinky.....

BTW, if you use Locktite, I recommend the blue locktite for small screws. It doesn't need to be heated us to remove. Also I highly recommend an EWK barrel nut removing tool, his tolerances are very tight which helps in removing stubborn nuts.

I bought a couple new B&S about two years or more ago, 4" for the 715 and 6" for 744 and one of them would only screw into about .004" clearance for B&C gap and IIRC it was the 715 which is the plinking barrel so for me it wasn't a big deal.
Speaking of those 6" 22 caliber SS barrels that CZ dumped for $9 I bought two and have wished I had bought at least two more for that price.
I'm headed to the range today with the old early '50's Savage in .222 caliber and the 744 with 8" scoped barrel to see how it compares with a friends Marlin '94 in 44 magnum with an 18" or 20" barrel. I have 100 rounds of 240 gr LSWC that are about 1200fps, some 240 gr LRNFT loaded for 900 fps to 950 fps range and 20 Nosler 300 gr SJHP over 15 gr. of AA #7 which is listed as max load and accuracy load in the Nosler reloading book.
Should be fun afternoon.

I agree with Mox EWK's barrel wrenches are second to none...
+1
As for me .. I am heavily vested in seeing that EWK start making barrels and shrouds. I am very much wating on them versus getting them from CZ-DW. Not that I do not want to support CZ, I do. But I think there will be a much better value from EWK ( choice, customs, quality, and lastly and least ...price).
In fact, truth be told .. I am thinking about "dumping" excess BA's now, and using that money to pick up EWK BA's later. Once EWK, gets into swing I am hoping all this pack busting goes away. I think it is a sad practice, but where there is a profit...there are those that would chase it.

Yeah, it does!
I needed a propane torch for some soldering anyway, so I went out and got one of them, and will try getting the nut off today. When I saw the loctite on the back of the nut (I had to put a super bright light on it to see it), all I could think of was when a friend of mine bought a super clean S&W 28 at a gun show a couple years ago, and when he decided to swap the grooved trigger for a smooth target one, and discovered that all the sideplace screws had been red loctited! What a hassle that was to fix. After messing up one of the screws trying to get it out, the whole gun was put into the oven and heated up and the screws finally came out. Even then, it was very difficult, as the screws had been "vised" (Threads partially crushed with a vise or vise grips) to tighten them up. Once they came out, he took nail polish remover and got the rest of it out of the holes in the frame, and using new screws, put it all back together and off he went. He still has it, and over time, the screws match the rest of the gun, and look original now. He sees that guy all the time at the local shows and even though he's had some nice looking guns, he thinks about the 28 and passes him by.
At least the 15-2 I just got came from someone else, and the sideplate screws came out fine. Other than a sideplate scratch, and a few nicks on the triggerguard, it's about as clean a Monson 15-2 I've seen in a long time. It's a good match for my 715 I bought for $269 on GB in 2005, which is near mint.

I bought a used gun done same way about 25 years ago and just put the whole gun in a pan full of "nail polish remover" aka acetone overnight and those side plate screws came right out without any effort to speak of, but then no a$$hole had flattened threads either.

We must have bought all those 6" SS .22 barrels. I bought two of them as well. Bores are much rougher than the Monson barrels (blued) I have. Both of mine have a small machining flaw in the forcing cone just where the grooves start. Flaw is in the same spot for both barrels. I think it will polish out.

Man you guys should have seen the new barrel still unfired that I sent in today, looked like an unfinished barrel.
Look what I found today for less then $300 at pawn shop, S&W M 15-3 made in '75 that has only been fired six times by original owner since buying it new. I was there in shop visiting my friend that owns the place when the old man and his wife came in with the gun. I gave my buddy $50 profit and brought it home, will probably trade or sell it because I don't like K frame Smith's.

Well, today I received a replacement barrel from CZ, via Genny @ D/W in Norwich. After a bit of prompting, I did finally get it to bottom out on the .006 feeler gauge, but I'm not all that thrilled with the quality of the bore itself. Like the original barrel, this too has a bit of a "frosted" apperarance to it. Hey, for all I know this is a trademark of Dan Wesson. I've been around a lot of guns for a lot of years, and I'm kinda know what a quality bore should look like. I have to say, I'm not impressed with the quality of DW barrels. So Eric, if you're reading this we can only hope you'll be offering us a better alternative in the future.
