I recently bought a DW 44 mag 8" for $200. It appears to be in new condition. It has an internally ported barrel. Since there is no model # on it from what I have read I assume it is a model 44. I would like to find a source for a barrel wrench as the gap is at .008 and I understand it should be at .006. Is there anything else i should know about setting this gun up. I intend to use it for hunting and would like to add optics , rubberized grip, and start handloading. All my prior handloading has been for autos so any hints would be helpful. Any suggestions such as setup tips or sources for parts would be appreciated.

Welcome John and congrats on a great purchase.

Someone here may have parts and Dan Wesson in Norwich, NY has new barrel wrench kits for $43 and also grips, etc.  The price-list is posted here on the forum.  You can reach DW parts at: (607) 336-1174 ext. 21 (Priscilla).  Gunbroker & eBay frequently have wrenches and grips +, also.

Hopefully someone else can help out with the sight and other topics.

I used a B Square and a Leupold 2x on my model 40 and it's held up for over 10 years so far.  I mounted it on one of my 8" shrouds and have a 2nd shroud for iron sght shooting.  For field use much higher magnification requires a sturdy rest to fire consistantly.  My set-up has taken rabbits, a few deer and even a few prairie dogs.

ENJOY!I've been using H110 powder with cci 250 primers and 240 hornady hp xtp bullets in front of 22grains ofH110  powder, also try IMR 4227. Always work up your loads, and watch for pressure signs. Read the books and save your self!
