271xxx is a 1980 gun, unfortunately the online S/N listing accepts any submission, it has some pretty strange entries.
The unfluted cylinder is really, Really cool, and was a rarely utilized option
Welcome to DWF
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Look to see if there is either a tiny mark of some kind to designate one particular chamber, or if it seems that one chamber got a lot more use than others.
Non-fluted cylinders were primarily favored by competition shooters, who often would only use one chamber for maximum accuracy.

The punch mark may indicate the chamber which was favored, for max accuracy. When I was a kid, I watched a champion fire one round from his Colt, eject, reload and fire the next round, all within the timed-fire limits. Six rounds, the hole in the target could be covered with a dime -- at 50 yards.
They were used for pretty much everything, but yours may have been used for distance shooting, like the one I watched.
Non-fluted cyls have a little more mass.
