I have been looking for a 357 SM w/8" bbl and finally located one at pawn shop for a great price, so I will soon be joining the DW fan club.

Looking at the thumbnail photo's on the left sidebar I see a hooded front sight on a SS revolver. Q. Are these factory options available for purchase or are they aftermarket and if so who makes them?

Great source of info and tech knowledge here and I will be a greatful reciepient of much of it.

Jim, welcome to DWF. Is yours a 40 (blue) or 740 (stainless)?

And of course, in true DWF fashion,

post-pics

The hooded sight you are seeing is very rare and specialized, If you find one you are a VERY lucky guy.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Welcome to the DW club.  Yep, those hooded front sights are part of the SRS (Super Ram Silhouette) system which you don't see often.  If you see one you at a decent price you need to grab it fast!

welcome to the dwf-sign..  Most of your questions are already answered.  I just thought I may add that to my knowledge only the Norwich produced generation of revolvers were offered with the SRS-1 series front hooded sights.

Thanks for the hearty welcome! It is a 40 Blue finish and I will post pictures as soon as it is in my hands. I bought it after a member on the Handgun Hunting Forum pm'ed me that a friend of his who owned a pawn shop had it for sale. As stated in my opening post, it is an 8" and he said the cyl. was binding up when it was turned and there was no visable cyl gap. I have never owned a DW but I know the gap is adjustable and should be an easy fix. It was listed for $490 but I called the shop owner and offered him $350. We settled on $375 and he set it aside until my $ and ffl copy arrived. Most likely won't get to him before next Sat. as my BIL had to mail me a copy of his ffl to use.

I'm really excited about this find and will be calling my BIL and asking if the brown sleigh has arrived every evening after June 4th.

Does anyone make an aftermarket hooded sight for the model 40, the same inquiry on a source for a scope base.

Man, landing a model 40 for $375 is a gtdw for sure, way to go!!occasion

As far as I know, nobody is currently making hooded front sights for DW's. I believe BoMar used to make them a few decades ago, but finding one today is akin to finding the proverbial needle in the stack.laugh Keep looking though, you may just find one somewhere.

Wow, what a great find.  I paid a lot more for my 740, still worth every penny. Looking forward to seeing those pics once you get the gun.

Congrats!! occasion

Woohoo!!!!  That definitely qualifies for a gtdw!  The hooded front sight will be a tough one to come by, but scope bases are out there.  The B-Square is a clamp-on which does not require drilling and the Weigand is a drill mount.  Buehler is also a drill mount that comes around from time to time.

Great find and welcome to the forum!  To my knowledge no one is making the hood sites any longer.

Nice to have another Virginian in the forum!

Welcome to the DWF.

Leupold also made scope-rings that will clamp onto the vented rib: see pic.

Image Enlarger

They come in blue as well.

Unfortunately they are also hard to find.

BTW $375 is less than half of what I paid for my 740.

Enjoy.

I know it's a great deal, but even a blind hog finds an acorn in a field now and then.

I will try the Leupold rings and see what I come up with.

Didn't DW offer mounting hardware for their revolvers? Sure missed the boat if they didn't.

An outstanding deal there on the 40! The hooded front sights came from Lansing Shooters Supply. They sold for either $25 or $35.

Welcome to the SM club, I also have a 357SM blued that was a pawn steal.  The hooded sight was also an option on the Monson models and by Bomar, one of the sights sold on Ebay awhile back for $250 used, I bid but stopped at $100 as they weren't that high new.post-pics
