So I picked up a Dan Wesson 14-2. This is my first DW revolver. I got the pistol from a coworker.
I got to shoot it a few weeks ago and it wouldn't lock back for SA and DA had light primer strikes. I took possession last night. I was hesitant about getting it but ended up getting it for a good price.
I adjusted the grip screw and it now locks back in single action. I also successfully changed the barrel
I tightened the screw back until it wouldn't lock in SA then backed it off a half turn. Problem is. Ow the grip is loose. I saw a thread that mentioned I may have to file/cut the grip screw shorter or get a different screw. I assume I could also put a washer on it correct?
lastly, I think the grips are wrong or messed it. There is a ton of space between the grip and the frame. I assume this isn't normal. What would cause this? Wrong grip? I can't imagine it ever fitting right the way it looks.

Grip could be warped. Is the hole in the grip square or round? Square is for small frame guns, round for large. It's possible someone put a large frame grip on it and it fits loose. You can use a washer to correct screw length.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

The Grip Screw should have a Grip Screw Washer. If it does not, that's your problem.

First off, Welcome to DWF. Thanks for bringing this discussion out of of New Members.
Your 14-2 was made in 1981-82, and can be a great shooter for you.
Unless someone has done something very stupid internally on this gun, the functional issues are likely very easily resolved.
The finish is pretty challenged, the easiest solution is to Cerakote. Other options include having it re-blued, refinished in Robar NP3, Slick Shot, bright nickel,... There appears to be some pitting or moderate corrosion, I would suggest a fairly "thick" finish like Cerakote after stripping the gun to "white" and smoothing/polishing. You could easily refinish it yourself with Aluma-Hyde
The grip is just old and dried out, lot's of choices out there for a replacement if needed.
A 1982 14-2 with three B/A's, barrel tool/gauge, and grip is a really nice gun to have, there is probably nothing here that can't be fixed fairly easily.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
