So it is on the way. I bought a 44 Dan Wesson. I have a 2.5” barrel for it, and am going to try to carry it on my ankle. I am modifying an alien gear ankle holster to work with the gun. I will post pictures  when I have some

Those stubby 44's are fun to shoot.  At the public range, they always draw quite the reaction, a real fire show.

I got it in today and after being on a short hold, I was able to bring it home. Problem is I can’t get the barrel nut to tighten, everything goes on smoothly, but before I get tension, the barrel starts turning. I have tried it a few times but it is just loose. Any ideas?

Are the threads damaged on either end? Maybe pull it apart and try spinning the barrel nut on it and verify the threads on that end are okay all the way down.  Also do same with barrel nut on the bore end.  Make sure threads are all good too.  image.jpgImage Enlarger

I got it. I had to clean the threads on the barrel nut side. They were not shiny. After running the nut on and off a few times with the barrel out it works fine now.

Awesome!  I was thinking it had to be the threads if the barrel turned with the nut.

Not sure yet, just got the holster in the mail last night. I spent all day so far at a boy scouts thing with my kids. I still have to try to modify the holster. I am getting ready to take a look at it now. It is pretty heavy, but only time i will probably consider ankle carry is when i am at my office setting 8 hours a day. My iwb holsters get uncomfortable setting at my desk. That pretty much made my 637 smith and wesson my edc weapon. It fits nicely in my pocket.

Well that didn't start off very well. First the alien gear ankle strap is just barely large enough to fit my ankle. No extra for sure. And it might not stay fastened the way it is. Alien gear did tell me they off an extension for it, but i have to call to order. I am not sure i am going to do that though, as i don’t think i am going to successfully modify it. The super Alaskan shell seems to fit perfectly. There is no way to fasten it on without destroying the part that keeps it from sliding down the leg. Plus the shell wouldn’t work correctly on it anyway. I could drill though and mount some stand offs, but that wouldn’t work very well. I do think i could modify a pancake style holster to work, if the straps were bigger. I don’t have any holster large enough to fit the large frame dan wesson. Right now i have about $135 in the holster and at minimum would have to but a holster that fits the dan wesson, then buy the extension strap. Depending on how that works, then i might be able to make it fit. I am guessing at that point i will be close to $200 for this holster. Problem is i don’t even know if i am going to like it or even be able to wear it after i go though this.  Weight and size wise i think i could do it. I do have a shell for my PPQ, and fully loaded it is close to the same weight as the dan wesson, and though not quite as thick, i was able to wear it walking around the house and it wasn’t un comfortable. It feels odd with that much weight, but you couldn’t tell by looking that it was there. No printing at all.

does anyone know a cheap holster that would fit the 44? Nothing fancy, just a general size soft fit holster.

Maybe an Uncle Mike's. I think the extension would be the best bet. Have a shoe maker sew it on. Or use superglue? Have you ever heard of Urban Carry?

So I finally got a chance to shoot the 44 over the weekend. I have to say I liked it. the 44 special were pretty mild, I let my 14 year old son shoot them. he though it had less recoil then the 357, but more then the 38 special in the 357. I agreed. the 44 mag was also very pleasant for me to shoot, even shooting one handed was not bad. it has more recoil then the 357, but to me it felt more like a shove then a punch. I did tend to shoot a little high with the 44 mag in it. I only shot about 18 or each through it, ammo not available locally so I didn't want to go crazy shooting it.

The DW 44 really is a pleasure to shoot even with full power magnum loads and at least a 6 inch BA. Just ask my wife. She loves it!
