Seems to me it was 12b (correction, w-12), with removaable barrel, knurled ring protrudes on the front. 6 inch barrel , 357mag, pork chop grips, a scratch on the right side of the grip. No other marks on the gun. Bluing was very nice. No box, darn it.

Serial number is under the grip, said to be 400 ! (was in crane, 400)  Monson, of course.

$275 seemed like a good price. Put a paid hold on it. Pick it up next month.

I'm not up to speed on all the models  but 275 seems to be a good deal for any Dan.

Now you'll learn just how long a month can be drool

There is no 12b, it would be a Model 12, the "b" (for blued?) would be meaningless, there were only blued  DW's available in those days.

$275 seems pretty darn good!

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I agree, there shouldn't be a "b" in the model number. Maybe that's what the gun shop named it?

So it sounds like your gun should look like this one.smile

That is it! Thanks for the photo. Longer barrel on mine. Maybe I was seeing things but I thought I saw 12b on the frame. Will check it out when I pick it up next month.

Nice choice Mariog. I think the model 12  is a beautiful and underappreciated piece of Dan Wesson history. The barrel nut is like the mole on Marilyn Monroe's face. It adds to the exotic beauty. It is built a little different than a 15-2. I used the exploded drawing in the DWF archives to fix mine. Be careful to keep the crane in place when you remove the barrel unless you want to remove the cylinder. Treat it gently, they are older and less common than 15s.

Ole Dog, first welcome to the DW place. If it is a external barrel nut wrench you need I believe a standard 12 point 5/8 wrench fits. One of the more knowledgeable will be along shortly to confirm.

Thanks for that nugget LB. That's all I'll need. I am not very mechanicly inclined but my wife says if I could fix my revolver I  have no more excuse for the household fixit chores.

It's too late now. Used my gun oil to lube all the squeeky door hinges.

And when reassembling, don't crank it on there too tight. You can get a lot of leverage with a wrench, so easy does it.wink

Pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks CF. I know. With a Dan snug is enough. Ole  Dog

Porkchops with flush/recessed nuts are 1/4" shorter than exposed nut 'Chops. Exposed nut 'Chops have the same barrel length as 15-2's, I promise.smile

Take this pair of model 14's for example, they have a 1/4" shorter barrel length than most other DW's out there...

Still have not picked it up.  Thanks for the info.

Because I used the money (and more) to buy  a serial number 54  Pointman Major  PM10B.  A 10mm semi auto, blued, target barrel, adjustable rear sight, GREAT trigger (per seller).

So what is the difference between a DW target barrel and a DW match barrel? Match is tighter tolerance?

This will join my rare DW 10mm club. My other one is a Razorback Limited Edition.

OK, got my 12b. It is serial number 400.  Pretty early gun. No box, but the condition of the metal is nearly perfect. The pork chop gips have a marrk or two. Guess I have to load up some 357 mag for a range trip!

Sorry for all the posts. My computer is not letting me revise posts.

This is a model w12 made in Monson. Most of the photos show shorter barrels. Is a 5 1/2 inch w12 more rare?

Boy! That's a beauty Mariog. Be really careful when ejecting cases . The extractor star likes to scratch the sideplate if you let the cylinder start to swing closed before the star is retracted. Almost all small frame dans seem to have the scratches. If your 12 does't have them I'll bet it's hardly used. Great price too!
