I just put a deposit on a 740-VS8 today and I could use a liot of help please. This is the first gun I ever owned in .357 Maximum. I know the round is somewhat obsolete and I could buy reloads. I live in a apartment so reloading is not on the table for right now. My question is will it be safe to shoot .357 Magnum out of it. If so will it harm the gun long term? What about .38spl? Also it did not come with a box or any tools. Can I buy a barrel wrench anywhere, and if so are they all the same. I will also need to purchase a barrel gap tool. Also what should the barrel cylinder gap be?

Thanks, Sorry for so many questions. I'm very excited to pick this up soon. I think it was made in 1986? Serial number is SE0013xx

It is a beauty, you can buy 357 maximum ammo at Reeds Ammo her is the link http://shop.reedsammo.com/357-Maximum_c40.htm.  All you need for a barrel tool from EWK the link is on this page give them a call tell them what you need and they will set you up. Any .002 gap tool will work but they sell them at CZ and on E-Bay.   I had the very same issues with my first Super Mag and these guys helped me out with what I am now telling you.  Hope this helps.

Thanks! Would it be the large frame barrel tool?

Also can I safely shoot 357 magnum without doing harm to the revolver. I may want to find nicer old stock grips too.

Best guess on "Born On" date is just like yours, 1986, BUT that is just based on minimal data base info.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Barrel gap two thousandths, you do not want to flame cut top strap.  If it gets hot and won't index open gap up a little.

One of the key points about shooting .357 mag or .38 sp. is that you should try to keep the chambers clean.  If you don't you will experience lead and powder build up, and then when you do eventually shoot .357 max. the cases will either get stuck or they won't fully chamber at all.

Barrel gap two thousandths..copy that!

So I could shoot 357 mag and 38spl's as long as keep the chambers clean. Thats good to know.

Thanks guys!
