I am going to look at a limited edition 744 for sale in near by town (90 miles) that I am to look at and will let all here know the shape/condition. It is in a wood box I'm told, but not sure it's factory box. The asking price is $750 so if in nice condition is not unreasonable at at all, and would be a far better then buying a new S&W that's for sure.

I guess I should say that I am not a buyer because I have a very nice 744 with 6" & 8" barrels that's like new and drives tacks at 50 yards and besides I don't have the loose cash currently for a gun buy I am sorry to say.

After I see the gun I will post here as to what I thought about the gun and condition, pictures if any then those still interested in buying I can put into contact with this little shop. It most likely be Wednesday before I go check out the store and the gun, so be patient. Those interested can PM me anytime prior to my going to this shop, but it this gun does not meet my standards I will not pass info on and will post so here.

Waldo, It's nice to see ya again!

Thanks for checking it out for any potential members who are in a position to possibly buy it.DWF Sign

From your description, I would guess that it's one of these first 500 44's…

Image Enlarger

There were two versions of these. The first 250 were mildly engraved, the 2nd 250 were not. Both styles came in a wood case & were coated in a "Dove Grey" finish. These early 44's all have the short hammer spur & are numbered at 500 or below.

Looking forward to whether or not my guess is right.Smile

Got your PM DrMike

From the way it was described to me it was a regular SS gun and not one of those rare dove gray models, just regular SS model. Not sure as to it having been fired or not, not holding my breath as to it being new unfired however.

I am glad it's not a blued model as I would have to have it to go with my 744 that is a great shooter. The other gun I'm looking for is a blued 22, I missed one trying to haggle a guy down to sub $200 range. And would you believe some guy walked in behind me and bought the gun for $225 asking price, every time I think about it I get up set about my stupid luck.

Well it's a great looking shooter in like new shape, with some minor handling marks and shot some but not enough put any real wear on the gun. It doesn't appear to have ever even been cleaned and someone attempted to remove the barrel nut without the tool w/o success or any real damage.

Down side was no tools or documents other then a card in plastic telling about the limited edition etc.

Also gun shop owner was a little bit of a wacko nut ball and didn't seem like he was much of a haggler, but I could be wrong.

I sure would like to find a blued 44 model like it for that price range.

Thanks for the follow up Waldo.Laugh

So it sounds as though it's a stainless gun, then? What sort of limited edition is it? Gotta love those whacko gun shop owners.Screwy rofl

It was one of the first 500 guns in 744 model, IIRC Ser. # was 00458 and a nice shooter since it had been shot some and had a slight turn ring and couple of small rub spots, looks like an attempt to remove the barrel was made because the barrel nut and outside edge of barrel were scratched, but no damage to shroud or barrel crown.

If I didn't have a like new 744 I would have jumped on the gun, even considered whipping out the CC because I had left check book at home to keep from buying another gun. Hope a member here gets or has gotten it

Yes I was really struck by the dove gray color of the SS gun and how good of shape it was in for a gun that had been shot by someone that knew nothing of Dan Wesson revolvers.
