I posted this 10 minutes ago, but somehow it didn't show up on the forum. I added pics and maybe that's a problem. I'm gonna try again.
I picked up my two DWs this afternoon both a 357 and a 44 Mag both pacs with most of the original important stuff that came from the factory. With the purchase came a Pachmayr grips for both and several holsters. They're shown in the pictures.

I gave him $1000 until I can gather the remaining amount. He happened to suggest that he would like to have a 45 ACP. So, now the deal is, the grand and my Ruger SR1911 and $200. Then he suggested that I give him the Ruger and buy his Browning 44 mag lever action rifle for a Grand. I have no clue what the Browning is worth but all three guns would cost me $2k plus the Ruger. I'm going to do a little research on the browning 44 mag and am taking the Ruger to show him tomorrow.

Yes it does.
I thought so, but my friend said you could use the same tool. I used the one tool I got with the guns to change barrels on the 44 mag. It came with the shorter barrel on it and I wanted the 8". I had no idea how tight the barrel nut should be torqued, so I used about the same torque to tighten as it felt when I took it off. Can you give me some insight?

I would like to find another barrel tool, the patches, gauge, shim, for the 357. Does the 357 take a different tool than the 44 Mag...anyone know.
It looks to me like you might have the original barrel tool for your 15-2 in the 44 case. I can see the "handle" part of an early barrel tool, is there also a hex headed "spud" that fits the slots in the 15-2 barrel nut?
If you do have these two pieces, they work together to remove the barrel nut. PLEASE be very careful using these tools, better yet, don't use them at all. Very possible to strip or "round out" the slots on the barrel nut using this tool. I'll try to locate a picture of this particular 2 piece tool.
Do yourself a favor and get the EWK barrel tool
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

When I wrote the original post, I hadn't really had time to look at what all I had. Late in the evening when I began putting them away, I realized I had a 357 tool that does in fact have the spud nut and wrench with a tiny allen wrench that swivels off the wrench itself. I also have several regular allen wrenches. When I first saw the guns, there was a shoulder patch that didn't make it home with me. I hope I can get that from him as well.
I'm not sure I made it clear what I'm paying for this set of guns. If we don't do any swaps or add other guns to the deal, I will shell out only $2000.
Now that I have carefully examined the pieces of the pacs, every item is in excellent condition. The 44's appearance is such that it may not have been fired many times. The cases have seen better days, but for their age, I think they're great.
The serial numbers are: 98XXX for the 357 and 012XXX for the 44. Any guess as to date of manufacture?

Model 15-2 S/N 98xxx is a 1977 gun, that barrel wrench combo is correct, and again, please do not use it. My first DW (and first gun) is also a 1977. I screwed up the barrel nut with the same tools, and had to send it in for warranty repair. Your gun has recessed chambers where the cartridge rim is fully enclosed and an overtravel screw in the back of the trigger, these features changed in later production years.
Model 44 S/N 012xxx is a 1981 gun

Dang, Steve...in my short time on this forum you seem to be a mountain of great information on the DW heritage and current issues. I can appreciate someone who focuses thusly on their hobby and especially if it happens to be a love of mine. Thanks very much for this info.
I would love to shoot both of these, maybe tomorrow when our range opens. Shame there aren't some other DW shooters in my area, or are there??? Paris, TN NW corner of the state near Kentucky Lake.

Jerry, there are many people here with much more knowledge than I.
It just so happens that your questions hit at a time where my very few answers were available.

If I were to have such knowledge, I would have to answer questions quickly, 'cause my answer availability dissipates pretty quickly. Advice: "Don't EVER get old!" But I think you're just trying to be modest...a good character trait! Have a great day.
