Range Report # 2

EWK Barrel

Friday, July 31, 2010

Second test of the EWK 6” .357 barrel for the Dan Wesson

Model 15-2.

Foreword:

As promised this was conducted at the much closer indoor

range. I arrived at 8:56am, (they open at 9:00 AM, Yeah I was #1 and only).

Unfortunately, they seemingly do not vent out the range at night .. so all the

heat built up from the day before just sits… rather like an old gym locker.

Range Report

I wanted to be as methodical as possible given my complete

lack of knowledge and experience. I am convinced that the 6VH I have has some

issue. I test fired it and again it shot low and left.  Therefore all tests were on my OLD gun with

the 6VSS  on an MTM plastic rest. Its not

a sandbag or anything near that good, but its portable.

The method:

Using the DW SS 6” barrel (about 35 rounds) shoot 20 rounds

at 10 yards using rest

Using the EWK 6” barrel (90 rounds) shoot 20 rounds at 10

yards using rest

Using the original 6” barrel (about 4000 rounds) shoot 20

rounds at 10 yards using rest

Misc:

Since it has been over night I will be “warming up”, I

expect reduced performance on my part for the first test.

Since I will be tired (hot, ect) I expect reduced

performance on the last 20.

Range fee allows for 1 hour shoot time, thus I choose only

20 rounds per test. (I lasted 63 minutes)

Personal reflection of the Test:

Two flyers right off the bat. Calmed down, got more steady.

10 yards is much more taxing, requiring much more concentration.  Lighting is really poor. Big issue: once I

hit the X or close to it, it was difficult to find something to visually latch

on to. Normally I would use stickers, but I did not want them to interfere.

This causes problems on test 2 and 3. By test 3 I was tired and hot. I rushed

some, though I did feel more “in the zone”. Possibly test 3 had a greater gap,

as I perceived more flash.

First six shots of the morning (brought the target in to photograph) Note the poor lighting.

This is the DW SS Barrel.

I unclipped the target and set it on the table to photograph with the barrel. Note original"flyers".

EWK Barrel. I turned the barrel sidways in the photograph so I would be sure to know which it is ( plus the color coded stickers). Once I had only half an X to shoot at it was frustrating.

Original DW blued barrel. This was fired at a faster pace, tired or in the zone?

If you go to my album ( http://picasaweb.google.com/pinetor/DanWessons# )

There are pictures of the lead foulings from each barrel… unfortunately, they just did not show up well in the photo, so I didnt want to waste your time loading them. However, as you can see from above..a LOT of lead was put through my old gun this weekend. Above is the dental pick I used to get the foulings out of the EWK flash enhancer.

Lastly:

I was going to "score" the three and then make some assessment based on the score. I will leave it to Eric to decide to so or not and what value doing such would actually have.  My unscientific conclusion is that there is more variance in the shooter than in the barrels. It would take a lot more effort to prove or disprove the accuracy of the EWK barrel. My opinion is that the barrel is 100% equivalent to the DW barrels.

Note to Eric: the cutting marks on the lands seems to have been polished near smooth within these 110 rounds.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

Very nice job and writeup.  You did a great job trying to keep things equal so the test means something.  The pics came out great too.  Thanks for sharing.Worship

Wow, fantastic report!!!! That's great news that the tool marks seem to be getting polished out! I agree with you, from the looks of it, the barrels do appear to be the equivalent of the originals so we should be good depending on what the other testers say.

Thanks again for all the effort you're putting in the testing, really appreciate it!!!! Laugh

Pine, excellent work. Now I know how to proceed with the evaluation. I've loaded some test ammo for consistency and will try to get some time in this week.

Eric, you've motivated the Pine man to do a great evaluation as i will try to duplicate for you and the Forum. You deserve our effort to validate your hard work towards what I am sure will be some great barrels and shrouds down the road.

You might consider using the DWF Ammunition Test target. Although it's an 8.5x11, and smaller than what you are using, it should be very workable at the range you're shooting. I find it to be very visible, especially since I print them on heavyweight bright white cardstock. The cardstock has the added advantage of hanging straight and flat, and the holes punch very clean.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

That's exactly what I was thinking as I read this report!Worship

Thanks for the excellent report, it sure sounds to me that EWK's barrels are performing nicely so far. Looking forward to other's reports. This is fun!DWF Sign
