I'll throw in my 2 cents here. I think you guys are trying to read a lot more into this barrel wrench color code thing than there actually is. Dan Wesson was a small company and they most likely bought supplies in when they were cheap if possible. They also probably used what ever was on the shelf at the time they needed something. This is a common practice in the automotive industry as well as the marine industry.
IE, I had an old Jaguar and even though the factory wiring diagram showed a specific color code for a wire, that didn't mean that your car would conform to the color code. If a guy on the line ran out of the proper color wire, he would use what was at hand to finish the job. Also, some items would be found on non corresponding year vehicles due to supplies either running out early or lasting longer than expected until used up.
I suspect DW did the same, they used what they had at the time and didn't really care about color.

Ok I have edited my original post to include steel wrenches and I don't care if it was from a gun you bought new or not , tell me what it came with , most people who bought new would probably not have replaced their wrenches with another type any way so if you bought used there is a good chance it is the original tool , I can sort out the odd ones later and know what should be with it by the responses , maybe this way I can get more responses.
OK, So now I have to go through my safe and make a list by caliber of all of my wrenches?
You're a hard task-master.

Zoommb am I well I think it is for a good cause and you have been of great help so far and I thank you , Scorpio I think you are somewhat right I don't think they cared about color but I also believe they bought in bulk batches from someone and had to buy more every year or few years , I would think that the mfg of the wrenches produced 1 or maybe 2 colors at the outside when they made them for each caliber more would not be reasonable since they would have to have more colors of caps avalible at that time and more colors of the plastic that they could melt . I think that is why we see so many blue , red and orange wrenches that would cut down on the amount of colored plastic they would have to stock and the colors of the caps they put on them is not done at random so they had to be following some criteria .
