I tried to take my 44 barrel/shroud apart. It was STUCK!!!
When I finally got them apart the shroud was completely filled with lead/gun powder residue. The barrel has been ported around it entire circumference and I guess it was never cleaned. What a mess!
Why would someone port the barrel like that?
I've looked and found 2 barrels for sale and both are ported in this manor.
There are two ports on the shroud, one on each side of the rib so the barrel ports ,I guess is the theory, will always line up
Donna at magna port says they only put 2 holes in the barrel and these are set to align to the shroud when the barrel is properly set to the cylinder as per DW specs

Yea, the porting sucks. It is most likely factory from what your describing. I had the same problem
with one of my 44's, stuck shroud and stuff. Never did see much in recoil control with the DW
ported design and you had to stay on top of cleaning the shroud out with in 50 to 100 rounds
of ammo.
Now that you have it apart, sell the ported on Ebay and buy a new unported barrel

The barrel ports are factory original, the idea was that pressure would vent into the void space between the barrel and shroud, then escape from the two shroud slots and reduce muzzle flip.
Stupid Idea!
MagnaPorting won't work well on a DW, for two reasons:
1) Once the MagnaPorting is done you must line up the barrel and shroud ports exactly, difficult to do
2) You may still have crud accumulating inside the shroud.
Just get an EWK barrel and don't worry about the porting foolishness
Frankly, DW Power Control was a (bad) solution looking for a problem!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I'd like to add my 2 cents here.
Yes, the way DW did the porting was not very effective and created a cleaning nightmare.
However, you can shoot one with the ported barrel if you wish, just follow these simple rules:
- Never shoot lead bullets through it if you ever want to get the barrel and shroud apart.
- Always disassemble the barrel and shroud and clean after each range session.
- Note: A 12ga. bronze barrel brush will get the mess out of the shroud.
It worked for me until I got smart and started shooting only the un-ported barrel.

I wouldn't shoot lead out of a power control barrel. The gas check won't prevent lead shaving off in those holes and you will end up with a barrel tube soldered into the shroud. Use the non ported barrel. If you don't have one, EWK has them as does Dan Wesson in Norwich, NY. Or watch ebay and Gunbroker.
Thats my 2 cents.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I did it a rather easy way. Check this little item out from EWK. Does the job and doesn't permanently alter the pistol.
