I know it is "whatever the market will bear" but I find the pricing in Fjestad's Blue Book nearly laughable when it comes to DW revolvers and what they seem to be bringing on Gunbroker.
Two examples from the online current edition of the Blue Book:
Model 15 2 in. barrel |
Grading | 100% | 98% | 95% | 90% | 80% | 70% | 60% |
$285 | $225 | $200 | $190 | $180 | $170 | $160 |
Last MSR was $346. |
Model 15 Pistol Pac |
- includes 2 1/2, 4, 6, and 8 in. barrel assemblies, extra grip, 4 additional front sight blades, and aluminum case. Disc. 1995. |
Grading | 100% | 98% | 95% | 90% | 80% | 70% | 60% |
$500 | $395 | $360 | $330 | $300 | $275 | $260 |
Last MSR was $629. |
Who updates the Blue Book? Why? Cause now that I am interested there aren't any DW revolvers available at those prices. I realize the Blue Book is a guide but in DW revolvers it isn't even close. It is the same case, (Blue Book is underpricing) with other individual "collectable" guns like the S&W 547 K-frame 9mm and Ruger Speed Six 9mm. However, it appears the whole DW revolver line is way underpriced.

Unfortunately, if you attempt to sell or trade at a gunshop, Blue Book is where they start their calculation, and work down from there.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

yeah... I had a gunshow vendor try and set a price on my DW using that book. I should buy a book just to do the same back at them. Meh, GB sets the price as far as I am concerned.

Blue book is an average of area prices, where you live prices may be
higher or lower. This is explained in the introduction of Blue Book.
My model 15 and model 40 were both purchased in line with Blue
Book prices, my 44 I paid too much but still cheaper than most Gun
Broker auction's . In fact I can usually get any gun 30% cheaper at Ohio
gun shows than most of Gun Broker auctions, that's probably why
I have yet to buy one on GB.
Of course there are always exceptions, Kimber 1911's, Colt Python's
and even Reminton Wingmaster's bring a premium around here. And
yet a buddy of mine goes down to Texas every couple years and brings
back beautiful Wingmaster's for $250....go figure

Thats sounds like a money making position to be in! DW's seldom come for sale down here, and when they do, its a crap shoot on the price. The only really good supply were sent to a local pawn shop but he was obligated to put them on GB. Therefore generally speaking the GB price is the price around here (unless your selling). If I thought I could get a stedy supply of something that I could consistantly flip for a modest profit... I would jump on it.

Thanks for the input. I mainly wanted to see what seemed the average price for a shooter in case I run across one. I rarely see one here in Middle Tennessee. I understand regional differences in prices but wanted to get a "feel" for what might be a fair price. I'm more than passing familiar with S&W and Ruger DA revolvers, but am a NOOB with DWs. I don't flip guns, I just shoot the things. If they don't shoot for me I sell them for what I have in them if I am lucky enough to find a buyer.
I do volunteer in a reasonably successful gunshop and we buy, sell, trade strictly by the Blue Book and advise customers that they can get more money in private sales, Gunbroker or other local online or print advertising. We assess the condition with the customer, tell them that we will sell the gun at the assessed Blue Book price and give the customer 80% of that. We never sell a gun beyond what the customer sees and what we agreed on as the Blue Book value. If on a rare occasion that a gun's value was underestimated we call the customer back to inform them and to give them more money. Seems naive but we do a good business within the business plan. However, shills for and gunshop owners come to our shop to buy used guns to resell at their shops. Regardless, our plan is working and we are building a business making a living, not making a killing and have a reputation for fair dealing. The 4 employees/volunteers of the shop and the owner have a 3 business day wait period to buy any gun in the store unless we buy retail. We don't have store associates who flip guns for profit.

Cant get more fair than that!
All I can say is... if you get a nice one in.. let me know.. I will day trip it up there and pay Blue book plus most times. I have 4 15-2... I love them. I like tinkering on them. I figure I have problem lost overall on any that I have sold ( about 3.. but one was to my sister who got a steal on my only 715).
