WHERE can I find data regarding shooting accuracy from the short .44 magnum barrel. I'm not sure if it's the 2, 2 1/2 or 3" length that used to be made for the .44 magnum..can anyone tell me that ?
What is the optimum barrel length for the .44 magnum round... does any one know ?

The 2" barrel is accurate, however, holding it consistantly to shoot consistantly is another matter. I use 44 special velocities with the 2" barrel and as for optimal length; as far as max velocity, longer is better, but what feels confortable and shoots well with you is the final factor. I hunt with 8" and sometimes 10" barrels, but my son hunts with a 4" barrel and does quite well.
None of my DW barrels are ported. The only ported barrels I have are rifle cartridge calibers for my Contender pistol. The weight of the DW is sufficient, even with the 4" barrel to keep recoil tolerable, I just prefer longer barrels. I do use and recommend either Pachmeyer or Hogue rubber grips for extended shooting.

Have you ever shot a longer or shorter barrel ported vs. unported ?
My 8" shroud is ported but the barrel is not.. I'm toying with the idea of buying a ported 8" barrel to compare and see what the deal is first hand.
In talking with CZ folks they say that with the shorter barrels the recoil is reduced by up to 30% in ported barrels.. BUT they must be cleaned regularly.

The porting definitely reduces felt recoil, which is why I have it on my Contender barrels. You must have the older style porting, which consists of slots on each side of the front sight and the propper barrel would have snall ports around it, which are supposed to vent out the ports in the shroud. If so, they discontinued this style because of problems removing the shroud after long shooting sessions. The area between the barrel and shroud get a build up and it tends to make breakdown difficult. The newer porting, in front of the front site has had none of those problems as far as I know.

The ported barrels are no longer offered as I just checked with Keith at DW yesterday.
I will be going with a new 4" barrel & shroud next month for my 744 for sure.
