Had a silhouette practice day today, and I finally got to shoot the Big Dog, the .445-V8S. It's been with me the last couple trips, patiently awaiting the call to action, but other projects kept getting in the way.
Gorgeous day today, except it was a bit humid and not enough breeze to stay cool.
I have not shot this gun enough, except for some load work, so today I was just going to shoot for fun. Checking the notes I had in the ammo box, I only had sight settings for the pigs and rams, at 100 and 200 meters. Well, this should be easy to figure out.
There were 2 loads that tested well in the MTM box, 40 of them with the Sierra 250 grain FPJ, 60 with the Hornady 300 grain XTP. Starting with the 250 grain Sierra, loaded with AA-1680, I figured 3 clicks down from the pig setting should be correct for chickens at 50 meters. At the shot, I didn't see anything...the chicken went down so fast, you could have sworn I missed it, but there were only 4 left on the bank. Shots 2-5 flattened the rest of them. Resetting the chickens, the hits were right where I hoped they would be, near the center.
Back up 3 clicks, and the pigs were easy victims. They also flattened quickly. My ram setting was 12 clicks above the pigs, so lets take the easy way out, start with half that and add 6 clicks to the turkeys. 5 shots later, all the turkeys were down. Looked like good hits in general, so on to the rams with 6 more clicks. The Big Dan took them with ease.
With that done, I reset to chickens and shot the 4 banks again to confirm the correct settings. Missed one turkey and one ram when the nut behind the trigger got loose, but I think I'll go with these settings.
That finished off the 250 grain Sierras, time for the 300's. These things have noticeably more recoil, but you should see how quick those rams fall. This time I worked backwards on the sight settings and filled in the blanks for turkeys and chickens. Interestingly, the 200 meter ram setting for the Hornady 300 grain bullet was 7 clicks lower than the one for the Sierra 250 grainers.
After recording the new sight settings, I decided to shoot a few from the standing position. Averaged about 40 percent hits on the rams, but each one was way cool, watching that ram fall with the gun in full recoil. Man, this .445 sure is a TON of fun to shoot...it might have to go with me on all my range days.

IHMSA80×80,
I have one of those 445's but not a range to knock down steel, AND I must admit I may be lacking a bit of courage right now. I shot the 44 Mag with the new slotted/compensated barrel yesterday and that was quite a mule. Didn't think it would recoil like it did. I'll build up to the big gun soon and would like to find the range to do it on.
Good report, thanks.

Excellent report on the BIG gun. They are alot of fun to shoot, but you must be mentally prepared to do it. After several shots I have found it must be mind over anticipation or the trigger jerking can begin. Excellent reporting as always, Thanks!

Nice report and it seems you had a good day at the range.
I myself took the family out this weekend for some bbq and shooting at the range over here in the middle of Sweden.

Hi Shootout, even in Swedish it sounds like a great day with the family. These are the memories that stay with all involved. Thanks for sharing.

Nice range Karl, looks like you had a great family BBQ. I see you also have a .445 Supermag Dan Wesson.
I saw your YouTube video from Don's Guns...did you go there? I used to live in Indianapolis, Indiana, and have actually been to Don's Guns and talked to him several times.

The post with Don`s Guns was made by a friend who took a trip to the states so i havent been there myself.
Your range looks stunning on the picture you posted IHMSA80, i wish my range looked like that but im pretty much alone taking care of it. Can you adopt me? I will work for food, roof and free access to the range you got. 😉
Translating to English could be done when i get to it.
The old German cannon (from 1939 and got all the eaglestamps) has been the for many years after the army forgot to collect it, i have asked them to come pick it up but i think i will strip it of the sights and other parts before they get here as they will destroy that old gun.
This weekend it will be more BBQ and shooting.

OK Karl, you are officially adopted. You can shoot here free anytime you want.
I think it would be neat to have that old cannon around. You might consider selling it to some military collectors, who would probably pay well for that. Maybe even donate it to a museum. Don't let them destroy that piece of history.

I wish i could keep the old cannon but its no legal way to do own one here in Sweden.
The reason i called the Army was so we dont end up with problem if they one day found out it is missing and remember where they put it.
Do you provide the roof or do i just put a tent up on your range?
