I finally obtained about two hours at the range today between hectic schedules. I took along the new to me 10″VH stainless silhouette .22, .357 SM and new to me model 83 FA 475 Linebaugh. Beautiful day to be at the range, had it all to myself too. Started with a few rounds out of the .22, it functioned great, accuracy with the only ammo I had along? I'd rate that a 6 maybe. That muzzle doesn't move on that heavy 10″ barrel with target velocity ammo.
This gun was on an auction for 35 minutes on GB with a BIN of $475.00 well you know the rest of the story
Next out was the model 83 FA 475 Linebaugh. I already own a Magnum Research in this caliber and enjoy shooting it a lot and I really got “comfortable” with the Linebaugh cartridge using the BFR. Well I took the rest of the rounds left from Jaggman and I's range day awhile back and had one round in the box that I was not sure what it was? Bad part is I loaded them all, I sort of remember making a test slower round and figured that was it. I loaded it for the first round and well, anyone here ever been humbled by a gun before? I had a first time ever experience and gained new respect for the Linebaugh. I've seen on videos guns that reach out and let you feel the recoil, but man never thought it would be me! That shot rang off and I was stunned at the sudden pain in my left forehead! I was hurt, shocked amazed all at the same time. The front sight blade made a direct and firm dent in my forehead, OUCH! I tried to extract the case and had to take out the cylinder and rather forcibly drive out the spent cartridge. Wow was it tight! I have no idea what the world I did with that round, but I never want to do it again! I put on my shooting gloves and like being thrown from a horse was deermined to take control of the situation. I loaded a few rounds that I knew what they were. The gun kicks much more than the BFR no doubt but the forehead was left alone the rest of the day. I seemed to have obtained a flinch from that point on for the day go figure? As the blood started to clot I decided to shoot the 357SM, now that was a pleasure, it felt like a .38 special after what had just happened. I had it shooting a nice gropup at 50-yards when the headache told me to hang it up for the day.
Linebaugh “headbanger”
I hope to have more time with the .22 soon and have a variety of ammo to try with it.
I am not sure how much of a range report this ended up being, but it was a day at the range and boy sick as this sounds, still better than going to work just a different kind of headache

Recoil claims another victim! I have yet to be actually hit in the head, that has to be an educational experience for sure. I have almost had one fly out of my hand once, though.
Man, look at that 722…what a SCORE!! That one is a real beauty, including the grip. There's some really nice grain in that one. Hopefully you find the ammo that it likes soon.

Great report SMF. The 722 looks great and what a deal. To bad about the headache but at least the barrel was not shorter or you may have had a cleft chin. Cool pics by the way, even the wood pile still looks good.
Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

SMF,
I am glad that you got to shoot the "unknown" 475 round. That would have been some range day if I'd have been there, but we would have had a pic of the head butt for sure. Makes me wonder about the box of unknown 445's I got with my 7445. They might require a football helmet when I try them out. Good range report and that would have been an interesting ER visit: "No I didn't shoot myself, I hit myself with my gun".

You might want to have FA take a look at your 83, in case the cylinder was damaged.
Just a thought. I would do it, but then again, I have an aversion to experiencing my own death or dismemberment. If they said there was no way to test it, I'd spend the $286.00 for a new cylinder.
JMO.
Glad you survived and it's no wonder you had a case of the flinches after that.

Ouch SMF! (substitute head for computer here)
Very nice 722, looks just like mine with the same combat grip. You will need to try lots of different .22's in that one. They are very picky for some reason, but maybe yours won't be, since it is a Palmer gun. Mine is a Monson...never knew Palmer made any of those. Now I have to find a couple of those also.
I had to laugh at your .475 experience...that is laughing in sympathy, since I had a similar incident, which I won't tell about at this time. At least it wasn't anything more serious, like an eye.
Thanks for the report!

My 722 fires reliably fires every brand of ammo I've ever fed it (unlike some of my autoloaders) but some brands are much more accurate than others in my revolver. I tried 100 rounds each of about a dozen different brands before settling on a couple that work well, and buying more expensive (Match) ammo did not make a big difference
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
