There's really no "collector value" on a standard grip, so no, it won't decrease the value of the gun. If you destroy it in the process you probably lose $50 or $60 to replace it. I've finished quite a few grips to smooth out light nicks and dings, and I noticed that some came out looking better than the original finish for the exact reason you stated - the grain is often hidden under the original finish. I use a Minwax wipe-on poly. - 10 coats.

Once you remove the grip from the gun, reach down through the tang slot and pop then out. There will be a hole and you can push them out from the inside. I use a small Allen wrench.
