Yes removing a fixed barrel has come up but I cant find any dicussion either. I do know there have been owners who sent their FB Dans back to the factory and had the barrel removed so they could use other BAs. I believe the original barrel is ruined in the process. Contact Keith Lawton for info at the factory I am sure he will answer you.

You would need a proper vise to hold the frame and another to hold the barrel. Delrin or other type inserts specific to the revolver are usually used to protect the finish. I suppose you could use something else that would support and protect the frame and barrel. I try to do a lot of things myself, but on this I'd go to the factory or a competent gunsmith with the proper tools. Just my opinion, but you risk messing up the barrel or 'tweaking' the frame.

I sent my fb 715-2 back to Dan Wesson and had it converted to the interchangeable system. They sent the original barrel back to me. It looks fine. I was told by DW that some of the fb models had epoxy on the threads which would make it very difficult to remove. Mine turned out fine though. This was years ago during the Bob Serva years. I wouldn't attempt it myself.
That is wise. Even though they are fairly rare, they are not bringing as much as a removable barreled dan. If you could do it yourself it would be more financially feasible. If you have one with a 3" or 5" barrel that you end up salvaging it would be a bonus as you would have a very rare length. Kind of like a 3" or 5" Python, comparatively speaking.
