Just picked up my first DW. The gun is in great condition, to my standards, and I really like the plum "Barney" look of my frame. I just noticed that the revolver is missing pins 12 and 16, the firing pin retainer pin and rear sight retaining pin, respectively.
Here's the exploded view for quick reference: http://www.gunslot.com/files/gunslot/images/77151.gif
Is this still safe to take to the range?

Sorry, need to do the Admin thing here-
You should not shoot any gun that you believe has parts missing. The sight roll pin may only affect POA/POI, but any part of the fire control system (ie: firing pin retainer) may be part of the safe usage of this gun.
You are advised that this gun may not be safe to shoot.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Go to the link on the right side of the page and contact Eric at EWK, he may be able to supply you with the parts you need, or at least point you in the right direction. Also, you can always contact Dan Wesson in Norwich NY and order the parts from them, they still support these guns.
BTW welcome to the DWF from the Harrisburg area!

Thanks Steve. Safety is #1. Some other members have suggested the roll pins are there. I have checked myself and can confirm both pins are present. My only question is if the firing pin retaining pin is seated properly. On the thumb side I can see the pin recessed about 1/32". On the knuckle side it is seated too deep to see the roll pin. What do you think about this?
Regardless, I will have the revolver expert at my range check it out before firing.

How can 16 be missing - without it the sight would fall off. It looks like it is in there - I can see it in the hole! And without 12 the firing pin would fall out! Check it again!
You're right, harly - rechecked and both pins are present. See my response to Steve CT for my only remaining question...

Do the "finger test"
In SA mode, with the cylinder open and your fingertip on the spot where the firing pin will hit, do you feel it hit fairly hard? Does it retract and hit pretty much the same in DA mode?
These are hollow roll pins and do not have to seated equally from side to side on the frame, as long as they retain the firing pin properly.

Steve, It does strike fairly hard SA and DA. I suspect everything is operational and will at least have it looked at by our revolver guy at the range. Can you tell by the picture if the front sight blade is replaceable? There is a pin underneath it, so I assume that is how it would be switched out, but don't really know what model this is or much about DW revolvers other than what I've learned on here in the past few days.

Picture looks like it is the pre-76' sight for 15-2 and I'm purty sure I can see the fixed pin in the rib.

I think Cecil might be on to something there...

I have a zoomed in picture of a barrel front with interchangeable front sights that may help.
Notice the visible Allen head screw underneath the front sight blade? If you have one of those, the Dan Wesson barrel take down tool (or an appropriate sized Allen hex wrench) will let you easily swap out the front sight blades. Some of the earlier 15-2 front sights are pinned in to the barrel shroud however, and are not so easily removed.
I already had these images uploaded from a previous DW forum discussion about the firing pin retention roll pin, and they might shed some added light on the topic.
Pardon my crude drawings and take down photos. The drawing is obviously not to scale, and the picture was one I took while disassembling my revolver so as to have an idea of how it all goes back together.
You can still get a rough idea of how the roll pin retains the firing pin in place from the above images though.
You would not be the first person to check to see if a roll pin is there using a thin round object like say a paper clip, and find the paper clip goes all the way through the hollow round of the roll pin. A person might then erroneously think that maybe the retaining roll pin was not there, or something was wrong. It's just the way roll pins are.
Many times a roll pin likes to go in and out from a specific direction as well. They do not need to be centered, and if the roll pin does not fall out of the frame, it is working as intended. If worried you can always pick up a small parts kit from one of our vendor sponsors EWK arms, and replace the roll pins during the next thorough take down cleaning.

In the meantime welcome to the forum, and enjoy the new to you model 15-2. It's a most excellent revolver.
