Hello,
I am in the process of buying a used 715 stainless steal .357 revolver. It has one 6" barrel/shroud attached and the dealer has a 2nd 6" barrel and shroud that he bought from the previous owner.
Is there different rifling available for 6" 715?
The dealer seemed curious why the previous owner had an extra barrel, I was curious, too. The only thing I could think of was that maybe the rifling was different on the second one. Is that possible, and if it is how can I check without taking the barrel off the pistol? I told him to hold the 2nd barrel until I did some research. He want's $100 for it which seemed like a good deal. For that price is it worth buying it either way?
Thanks,

It seems that those that know more than me are asleep or not so I will try to answer you. First, price. At that price buy it immediatly!!! Anything under $200 is a deal on ebay if the shroud is in good shape. Stainless could go for more. If you don't want it most any member would pay you a reasonable profit to secure it for them. I would guess a 6 inch barrel would have the same twist. If it was a longer barrel and the former owner shot competition they might have more twist to stabilize a heavy bullet. No special reason is needed to crave more barrels. It seems to be a symtom of DWAS. Old Dog.

If I understand correctly the second barrel also has a shroud with it? Yes definitely buy it for $100 it is worth more than that if you want to sell it separately. Is the second shroud a different style? Some owners like to be able to change. Or perhaps the previous owner bought the extra 'just in case' or perhaps to mount a scope in the future.
The rifling twist could be different I guess. I believe you could look down the bore of each and compare and see a difference. (make sure revolver is empty and cylinder open)
Anyway, we will need to see some here when you bring it home

Thanks for the help.
I went back to the local shop today and told them I'd take the 2nd barrel, shroud & nut. It's still in the box and it looks like it's in very nice shape. It will be another month before I finish paying for the pistol and then probably a month after that before I get the 2nd barrel. I'm very fortunate to have a great little local shop that let's me pay as I can. They're good people.
As opposed to selling the 2nd 6" barrel, I'm hoping to find someone with a 4", 8" or 10" that they might be willing to trade (with or without some extra money coming from me) for the 6". That is my dream.
I also just bought on line a 2.5" 357 SS barrel, shroud and nut and a 357 barrel wrench, so I'm getting there.
