Hey, all!

Pistol of concern is a Monson stainless 741 with a  6" barrel.

Dumb question... is a ringed barrel in a DW very common?  I bought my .41 used from a friend of mine, it's always shot well.  Last time I had it out, shooting cast, it didn't do so well... so I pulled the barrel off and started cleaning it.  Once I finally got some of the leading out, I noticed a 'jump' when pushing the cleaning rod through with a patch... further inspection showed a lead ring about half way down the barrel.  Using LeadOut patches I was able to get most of the stubborn lead out... but you can see the ring of lead still in the ring cavity.  The outside of the barrel does not appear bulged, or bright where stretched metal might show that.  I don't ever really recall the ring previously... but I don't get all into cleaning my weapons maybe like I should.

Just curious about what you all think, and if anyone else has experienced something like this in a DW.

A squib and a follow up shot could bulge the inside of the barrel but the shroud may have prevented an apparent bulge. Try rolling the barrel on a flat surface. It may be such a small bulge it is not readily apparent. It is not normal.

Nothing to take pictures of... I probably should have tried to get a photo before I scrubbed out all the leading... it was pretty prominent.  Let me see what I can do.

If you're going to drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.

I find that if I shoot cast lead bullets that the lead fouling can get pretty bad. With my .357 shooting some reloaded .38s I started to notice that the lead fouling would get so bad that I couldn’t get the cleaning jag with a patch through the barrel. My fix for this was to fire a few jacketed .357s which seemed to clear out the lead really well; as in no lead fouling at all. If you could find some jacketed .41s and fire a wheel’s worth maybe that would do the trick.

A build up of lead is an indicator that one of the dimensions is wrong- either with the gun or the bullet.  For instance, if your throat is too small then you tend to get leading in the bore.  The bullet doesn't obturate as it should and, as it travels, the side of the bullet is subject to gas cutting until it seals into the grooves.

I had a .41 that didn't shoot well.  I discovered the throat measurements were too small, measuring from .408(-)" in 5 chambers to .409(-)" in the last.  I had them all reamed to .4125" and all is well with jacketed and cast.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
