Bought my first DW a couple of days ago and am doing some homework on proper care and maintenance. It’s a model 14 (pork chop), 4” barrel. It has the Monson stamp and came in the original box, which still has a price list in it dated 1971. I assume that came with it new so seems to be an early 70s build. The serial number is written on the box label and matches the stamp on the gun.
The somewhat unusual thing to me is that it’s only a four digit number and instead of being stamped conspicuously on the outside of the frame, it’s stamped underneath the crane so you have to swing the cylinder out to see it. Is this a common thing? I notice most pictures I see seem to have longer serial numbers stamped on the outside.

Yes, that is how all the early Porkies are stamped .. I've got several.

Interesting. I’ve got a model 12 of the same age with similar provenance; original sales slip, warranty that was part of a pistol pack. However, mine has a five digit serial. It looks like the first four digits were machine stamped as they are lined up and have uniform depth. The fifth digit has a slightly smaller font size, is not lined up with the other four and is shallower. Serial number is between 10000 and 11000. Anyone know if the serial numbers were grouped by model? Or specific ranges assigned to each model?

Browse through the Serial Number Registry to see the recorded differences;

The serial number data provided in the PDF is based on information provided by members of the Dan Wesson Forum. No records are available from the various Dan Wesson companies, and we rely records/recollections of original purchasers, paperwork retained with the pistol, dated barrel wrappers, etc. to determine an approximate date of manufacture. If you have information about your Dan Wesson that can be used to determine the approximate date of manufacture please complete the Serial Number Registry form.

Thanks. It seemed a bit unusual but as long as it's stamped. I know some older guns prior to 1968 may not have serial numbers but my understanding is that DW started in '68 so the thought whooshed through my head whether they could have built any unserialized before the GCA kicked in October of '68. Better that it is stamped since that's a debate I don't relish having with the PTB.
Will have to look into posting a pic.
